Discover Veracruz through the historic district of the city and port and the museums that showcase chapters of its history. Leisure beaches and an aquarium offering special animal activities add to its cultural attractions. If you are looking for accommodation, these different highlights can help you decide what kind of stay in Veracruz interests you.

Historic District and Cityscape

The city and port of Veracruz were declared a zone of historic monuments on March 1, 2004. The zone covers 1.5 km² and 170 city blocks, with historic buildings dating from the 16th to the 20th century. A 17th-century city plan and numerous colonial-era alleyways shape this historic urban area. It includes the Zócalo, also known as Plaza de Armas, as well as several other squares, parks, and gardens.

One prominent historic monument is the Baluarte de Santiago: it is the only surviving section of the former city walls of Veracruz and was built in 1635. The Museo Baluarte de Santiago displays “Las joyas del pescador,” a significant collection of pre-Hispanic goldwork recovered by a fisherman from Veracruz. The Faro Venustiano Carranza makes a different architectural statement: the building dates from the 19th century and is designed in the neoclassical style.

La Huaca also offers a distinct way to explore the cultural heritage. The neighborhood preserves historic courtyards recognized by INAH. Its vibrant culinary and cultural traditions include the Festival de la Gorda and the Picada. La Huaca is also considered the birthplace of Agustín Lara and Toña la Negra.

Museums with Different Themes

At the Museo Fuerte de San Juan de Ulúa, visitors can explore cells, passageways, dungeons, and courtyards. The permanent exhibition “Las culturas del Golfo” features 266 pre-Hispanic artifacts. The museum also displays weapons from the 16th to the 19th century, including suits of armor. It brings together different aspects: pre-Columbian exhibits and a weapons collection from a clearly defined historical period.

The Museo Naval México focuses on the Mexican Navy. It has 28 galleries and displays more than 1,700 exhibits. Visitors can walk through the different exhibition areas and learn about the Navy’s history and roles. A navigation simulator adds to the experience, and a dedicated Discovery Room is also available for younger museum visitors.

The museums therefore offer different perspectives: the Museo Fuerte de San Juan de Ulúa combines interior spaces with archaeological and historical collections, while the Museo Naval México offers naval-themed exhibition areas and the Discovery Room. This difference in focus is particularly useful when choosing which cultural sites to visit.

Aquarium and Leisure Beaches

The Aquarium del Puerto de Veracruz is located in the Zona PlayĂłn de Hornos. Its special activities include a guided encounter with penguins, focusing on their care and behavior. There is also a supervised activity that lets visitors dive with sharks. Both activities are subject to availability.

Regatas, Villa del Mar, and Martí are designated as leisure beaches in Veracruz. Together with the aquarium, they offer a different choice of attractions from the historic district and its museums: here, the coast and animal encounters take center stage; there, the city’s history, architecture, and collections. When planning, you can first decide which interests you want your stay to revolve around.
