At the Tamiahua pier, you can rent boats for trips to the beach and the lagoon islands of Isla del Idolo, Los Pájaros, Isla FrontĂłn, Juan RamĂrez, and del Toro. Along with the offshore reefs and local festivals, these offer different ways to plan your trip around boating destinations, coastal scenery, and cultural events.
Boat Trips and Travel Times
Boat trips connect the pier with several named destinations in the lagoon. If you are planning a trip, check availability and prices in advance for your travel dates. This will help you match your choice of destinations to the actual options available during your stay.
A CONANP visitor information notice dated April 7, 2025, gives approximate travel times from the port of Tamiahua of one hour to Isla Lobos and about 40 minutes to the reefs of the Sistema Arrecifal Lobos Tuxpan. The estimates differ by approximately 20 minutes; actual travel times may vary depending on conditions. This allows you to compare the two boat trips in terms of time without treating the approximate figures as fixed travel times.
Reefs and Coastal Scenery
The Sistema Arrecifal Lobos Tuxpan lies off the municipalities of Tuxpan and Tamiahua in Veracruz. It was designated a protected area on June 5, 2009. The system includes six emergent and one submerged reef structure, as well as more than 30 coral species, 280 fish species, and other marine organisms. It offers, among other things, scenic experiences and recreation.
Barra de Corazones is a beach in the municipality of Tamiahua. The beach has fine sand, a gentle slope, and moderate waves; the water is clear, and pioneer vegetation surrounds the beach. This makes it possible to distinguish between a beach within the municipality and the reef system off the municipalities of Tuxpan and Tamiahua as different coastal features.
Festivals and Religious Sites
Holy Week in April includes a Passion play. It is repeated the following day on the town’s main streets; the celebrations end on Holy Saturday. On July 25, Tamiahua holds a religious festival in honor of the Apostle Santiago. It includes religious observances and flower offerings. These two dates give your planning a specific timeframe. If you are traveling for a festival, check the event dates for your travel year.
The Church of Santiago ApĂłstol el Pescador is located in the municipal seat of Tamiahua. It is another religious site in Tamiahua and complements the festival dates with a specific place to visit.
Cultural Heritage and Other Sites
Within the municipality, the ruins of Hacienda de San Sebastián are considered a cultural asset; the archaeological ruins of the Comunidad de La Labor are part of the cultural heritage. These two sites represent historical and archaeological aspects of the municipality’s cultural heritage.
A visit to the Museo del pescador and the murals by Mtro. Pepe MartĂnez was scheduled in Tamiahua for August 18, 2025. If you would like to include these places in your own plans, check visiting options in advance.
