A road section runs from Federal Highway 145 via Huixcolotla to El Tamarindo. An infrastructure report from 2018 lists this section as running from kilometer 6+400 to kilometer 10+430, a total of 4.03 kilometers. Check current road conditions before setting out.

Nopiloa: Archaeology and Totonac Culture

In the context of the municipality of Tierra Blanca, Nopiloa is an archaeological point of interest: the site belongs to the Mixtequilla–Zapotal–Nopiloa corridor and is considered significant. Nopiloa is also noted for its exceptional beauty and cultural importance to the Totonac people. These aspects link the site’s archaeological character with its landscape and cultural context.

A stone known as “Piedra del sapo” or “Piedra del parque” was found in Nopiloa. The second name comes from the fact that the stone stood in Parque Juárez for 60 years. The history of the find’s name can thus also be connected to a specific place in the municipality.

Son Jarocho and Regional Landmarks

The central Son Jarocho, also called modern Son, predominates in the Tierra Blanca region. Its fast, rhythmic character distinguishes it from the varied, slower Son of the south; the harp plays a key role. Prominent Son Jarocho harpists from the municipality include Rubén Vázquez of Tlenhuicani and Ricardo Vázquez, known as “El Pirulí.” A steam locomotive beside the train station is a landmark of the municipality of Tierra Blanca.

Landscape and Nature

There are hills with caves in the Ejido Lázaro Cárdenas. Horseback riding is possible in wooded areas; there is also a natural bathing spot with sulfurous thermal water. Laguna María Lizamba is considered scenic. Restaurants on the lagoon serve seafood and products from the local fishing industry. Residents visit the municipality’s rivers and tributaries mainly during Semana Santa and in April and May. If you plan to visit one of these natural sites, check access in advance; if dining by the lagoon, check current opening hours.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The municipality’s recurring festival calendar includes the traditional carnival between April and May. It features folk dances, Mojigangas, horse races, equestrian events, and cockfights. The “Todos Santos y Fieles Difuntos” festival takes place on November 1 and 2: many households set up altars in honor of the deceased, and several schools also take part in altar exhibitions.

Two other festival periods partly overlap in December. The celebration in honor of the Virgen de Guadalupe runs from December 1 to 12 and includes nighttime pilgrimages. From December 11 to 19, the local livestock association holds a regional livestock fair. It includes exhibits of handicrafts and industrial, cultural, and service-sector products, with a cattle show at its center. Check the dates for the relevant year before traveling.

For orientation, the scale matters: the road connection described leads to El Tamarindo; Nopiloa, Ejido Lázaro Cárdenas, Laguna María Lizamba, and the festivals mentioned belong to the municipal context of Tierra Blanca.
