In the state of Tlaxcala, you’ll find a range of things to discover: mountain forests and ecotourism, archaeological collections, ancient sites and a UNESCO monastery complex. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering these themes separately. Santuario de las Luciérnagas is all about nature and guided activities; museums and archaeological sites offer different points of interest.

Mountain forests and guided experiences

Santuario de las Luciérnagas is located in the municipality of Nanacamilpa de Mariano Arista. It is associated with mountain forests, where firs, pines and oaks are the predominant trees. Ecotourism activities include hiking, camping and guided tours. If you’d like to combine your trip with a guided tour or a hike, this is a clear starting point for planning.

Monastery architecture as UNESCO heritage

In Tlaxcala, the Franciscan monastery and the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción are part of the serial UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Earliest 16th-Century Monasteries on the Slopes of Popocatepetl.” The Franciscan complex includes extensive atriums and open chapels, as well as a detached tower and a Mudéjar-style wooden ceiling. These details give architecture enthusiasts specific features to look out for: in addition to considering the complex as part of the World Heritage Site, you can focus on its individual elements. The site thus combines a broader World Heritage perspective with specific architectural features.

Museums: collections and opening hours

The Museo de Sitio de Xochitécatl is located in San Miguel Xochitecatitla, Nativitas, Tlaxcala. It displays 342 archaeological objects. Pottery, jewelry, offerings and everyday objects are connected with the prominent role of women in ancient Tlaxcalan culture. This gives the museum a collection-focused appeal that differs from Tlaxcala’s monastery architecture: here, the focus is on objects and their cultural context.

The Museo de Sitio de Xochitécatl is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; last admission is at 4:00 p.m. Check the schedule before your visit, as opening hours may change. This lets you plan your museum visit around the stated admission time.

Archaeological sites and their different points of interest

The Ocotelulco archaeological zone can be reached from the city of Tlaxcala via Gurídi y Alcocer, Ignacio Allende and Julián Carrillo, and by taking the turnoff to the town of San Francisco Ocotelulco. The ceremonial temple features a carefully polished stucco floor, two polychrome platforms, a bench and a central altar. The altar depicts Tezcatlipoca and symbols of sacrifice. The temple and altar therefore shape how the site is described.

The Tizatlán archaeological zone can also be reached from the city of Tlaxcala: access is via the Texmelucan–Apizaco Highway No. 117 and the exit to the town of Tizatlán. The named road and exit are key to finding your way here.

Zultepec-Tecoaque is located in San Felipe Sultepec, in the municipality of Calpulalpan, Tlaxcala. From 1300 to 1521, the site was an important trading center in western Tlaxcala. The complex comprises three plazas built at different levels and a circular temple dedicated to the wind god Ehécatl-Quetzalcóatl. Compared with Ocotelulco, the focus here is on its historical role in trade, the stepped plazas and the dedication of the circular temple. This lets you choose archaeological sites based on the features described for each one, rather than treating them as interchangeable visits.
