A former military fort, the 1913 land distribution, and a museum dedicated to regional railway history offer different ways to explore Heroica Matamoros. Playa Bagdad is just a few minutes from the city center. If you’re looking for a hotel in Heroica Matamoros, distinguishing between these highlights can help with your planning: would you like your stay to focus mainly on museums and history, or would you also like to include the beach?

The Museo Casamata and Fuerte Casamata

The Museo Casamata de Historia Regional is housed in a building constructed in 1865. It served as a military fort, an ammunition depot, and a saddlery warehouse before opening as a museum on December 30, 1970. Restored Fuerte Casamata remains as part of the former defense system of the strategic city of Matamoros and was included in INAH’s National Catalog of Historic Monuments in 1986. These dates mark two different milestones: the museum’s opening in 1970 and Fuerte Casamata’s inclusion in the catalog in 1986.

Agrarianism as city history

The Museo del Agrarismo Mexicano explores Mexican agrarianism as a social and political movement for the fair distribution of land. Matamoros is considered the birthplace of agrarianism: on August 30, 1913, General Lucio Blanco divided up Hacienda Los Borregos; the first distribution of agricultural land took place there. The date and specific historical context give the museum a clear focus.

The collection includes farming equipment, household utensils, and other everyday objects from the first half of the 20th century. Revolvers, rifles, and shotguns date from the Mexican Revolution. The collection also includes contemporary coins and banknotes, documents, photographs, and personal belongings of agrarian leaders. In this way, the museum brings everyday and work-related objects together with financial, written, and personal records. During a guided tour in December 2024, participants also learned about the social movements and figures that shaped Mexico’s agrarian history.

Railways, music, and contemporary art

The Museo del Ferrocarril: EstaciĂłn Heroica Matamoros presents regional railway history through exhibits on diagrams, spare parts, workshops and maintenance, railway operations, and cross-border trade. Visitors interested in technical processes and trade across the border will find a different perspective here than in the collections on the fort and agrarianism.

The Museo Rigo Tovar preserves the singer’s original birth certificate and a copy of his long-playing record featuring the songs “Mi Matamoros Querido” and “El Sirenito.” These two pieces add a personal and musical note alongside the historical themes.

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Tamaulipas has an open-air theater, a bookstore, a courtyard, a terrace, and a foyer where various performing arts events are held. This adds another cultural focus: contemporary art and performances alongside the city’s historical collections.

Playa Bagdad as a different highlight

Playa Bagdad is just a few minutes from the center of Matamoros. It is known for its fine sand and calm waters and is suitable for visitors interested in Gulf cuisine, fishing, or adventure activities. It offers a different kind of experience alongside the museums.
