Aldama can be planned on two scales: the Museo Regional de Antropología e Historia is located in the center of Aldama, Tamaulipas; the cenotes and other natural attractions are part of the wider Aldama destination. The options range from a specific cultural site to landscapes and coastal destinations across the broader region. If you are looking for a vacation rental, first consider whether the museum or excursions in the wider region will be your main focus.

The Museum in the Center of Aldama

The Museo Regional de Antropología e Historia belongs to the Aldama municipal government and opened on May 6, 2000. Its holdings include historical and archaeological collections, regional archaeological objects, and items from everyday life. Examples range from national banknotes and documents from the municipal archive to fossilized shells and mammoth bones from the Ejido Francisco Villa. Typewriters and irons are further examples of everyday objects. The collection thus brings together regional history, archaeological finds, documents, and items of daily use.

A 90-square-meter room for temporary exhibitions is used to present various artistic disciplines. The museum also has an auditorium and parking. The museum is in the center of Aldama; the cenotes are part of the wider Aldama destination.

Natural Attractions in the Wider Aldama Destination

The Cenotes de Aldama system comprises five named bodies of water: El Zacatón, Baños, Murciélagos, Poza Verde, and Alameda. Four of the cenotes described in the municipal plan are connected by an underground river that runs a few meters below the surface. El Zacatón is an open cenote approximately 140 meters in diameter and 335 meters deep. Poza Verde, one of the five named bodies of water, measures 150 meters in diameter and approximately 200 meters in depth. La Pilita is described as having a diameter of 30 meters and an explored depth of approximately 100 meters; La Azufrosa measures 12 meters in diameter and has a conical bottom. These measurements show different scales: El Zacatón and Poza Verde have significantly larger diameters than La Pilita and La Azufrosa.

The cenotes are located on private property; a group is responsible for monitoring the area. Check whether access is possible before visiting. Another natural attraction in the wider Aldama area is El Nacimiento, 13 kilometers from the municipal seat. At the foot of the Sierra, a spring emerges from inside a cave.

Activities and Directions in the Wider Region

The excursion destinations offer different experiences. In Barra de Morón, visitors can take boat trips and enjoy nature. Sport fishing and birdwatching are possible at Playa del Sol in the town of Barra del Tordo. El Salto is a waterfall on the Río Carrizal, where swimming and rappelling are possible. These water and coastal activities offer different options for trip planning alongside the cenotes and the museum.

Directions also vary. Playa Rancho Nuevo can be reached from Aldama via more than 25 kilometers of paved road and 18 kilometers of unpaved road; road conditions may change. Playa Barra del Tordo is 42 kilometers from the municipal seat; the drive takes approximately 40 minutes, depending on conditions. When looking for a vacation rental, it helps to decide on your preferred focus in advance: the museum and collection in the center, or natural and coastal destinations with their respective routes.
