In Comalcalco, festivals, cultural institutions, and archaeological attractions take place across different seasons. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering which event interests you: religious celebrations and a fair are on the calendar in May, while two cultural events take place in October. There is also a market selling handcrafted products and opportunities to learn about the region’s archaeology.

Festivals and Events Throughout the Year

According to the traditional calendar, Carnaval Comalcalco takes place in January at Parque Juárez and along the city’s main streets. The Enrama in honor of San Isidro is a religious celebration featuring a festive procession of offerings and live music on Calle Juárez. It takes place on the eve of San Isidro Labrador’s feast day, on the morning of May 13 or 14. The Feria Municipal is also held in May: it is scheduled for the second or third week of the month and includes cultural and sporting events. The city administration determines the venue.

The two May events have different focuses: the Enrama is religious in nature, while the Feria combines cultural and sporting activities. In September, the focus turns to cocoa and chocolate. The Feria Nacional de Cacao y Chocolate is held on varying dates around September 2 at Parque Central Benito Juárez. The program includes conferences, workshops, visits to cocoa haciendas, cultural festivals, and recreational activities.

October also offers two distinct time frames. The Festival Internacional de las Artes y la Cultura de Comalcalco is held on varying dates during the first week of October at Parque Central Benito Juárez; artistic groups from the region and abroad perform there. The Fiesta de Fundación commemorates the founding of the Municipio Comalcalco. It takes place during the week around October 27 and includes education-related competitions and cultural festivals at Parque Juárez and other venues designated by the city administration. The Festival Navideño follows in the first half of December: music, art festivals, and parades involve public and private educational institutions, churches, and businesses in the municipality, and take place on streets, in squares, and at Parque Juárez.

Discover Culture and Archaeology

Casa de Cultura Carlos Pellicer Cámara is located in the Colonia Centro neighborhood of Comalcalco. It houses an Escuela de Iniciación Artística incorporated into and certified by INBA. This makes the institution a specific point of interest for travelers interested in art and cultural education.

Nearby, the Museo de Sitio de Comalcalco displays archaeological finds from Comalcalco, including vessels and burial finds. It also features ethnographic objects and photographs related to the Chontalpa region, where Comalcalco is located. Archaeological objects are thus presented alongside materials that offer further insights into the region. Zona ArqueolĂłgica Comalcalco is located 2 km from the city, on Federal Highway 187 toward ParaĂso.

Market and Cocoa

Since opening in May 2022, the Tianguis Campesino de Comalcalco has been held every two weeks in the Municipio Comalcalco. It is a gathering place for families and tourists looking for fresh and handcrafted products. The Tianguis Campesino in Comalcalco also includes workshops and Tianguis Creativo, a multigenerational area for all age groups. Check the workshop dates and the current market calendar before your trip.

When planning your trip, the events’ date ranges are especially useful: the May celebrations have different themes and dates, and the October events also take place in different weeks. Dates and programs for the Feria Nacional de Cacao y Chocolate may change; the city administration determines the venue for the Feria Municipal. Check the specific details before your trip if you want to plan your stay around a particular festival.
