El Nogalito has a specific connection to mining and is also part of a gravel road corridor that connects several settlements. To get your bearings, it is helpful to consider two levels: the mining facilities in the town itself and other landscape and cultural topics in the municipality of Tierra Nueva.

Mining facilities in the local context

In addition to the Las Trancas tin mining facility, there are other mining facilities in El Nogalito. These facilities also contain tin and are considered to be the same size and of the same nature as Las Trancas. A 2006 geological survey places them 500 meters as the crow flies north-northwest of the Las Trancas tin mining facility. The other facilities are therefore defined both by their tin content and by their proximity to Las Trancas. If you plan to visit these mining sites, confirm access in advance.

Road corridor and orientation

A 2006 municipal inventory by the Servicio Geológico Mexicano describes a five-kilometer paved road from the municipal seat of Tierra Nueva to Presa La Muñeca; a gravel road branches off at La Presita. This gravel road corridor runs northeast-southwest and connects, among other places, El Nogalito. Other settlements along the same corridor include La Joyita, Balcones, Puerto de Lobos, Lobos, Las Higueritas, and El Camarón.

A 2006 measurement puts the corridor spanning several settlements at 50 kilometers. This length applies to the corridor as a whole, not to a single trip; the five kilometers refer to the paved road to the reservoir. The two figures therefore offer different scales for orientation: a paved connection from the municipal seat to the dam and a corridor spanning several settlements. Check current road conditions when planning your specific trip.

Landscape and culture in the municipality of Tierra Nueva

The municipality of Tierra Nueva offers additional landscape and cultural connections. Presa La Muñeca is associated with sport fishing and peaceful camping. Cerro de León offers panoramic views and is also associated with outdoor activities. The reservoir and the hill therefore represent different outdoor themes within the municipality.

Tierra Nueva is associated with Otomí history; the municipality’s historical landmarks also include Jardín Hidalgo and Templo de San Nicolás Tolentino. At Los Charcos, in the municipality of Tierra Nueva, the red stone Laja Roja, also known as “sangre de pichón,” has been connected with local history since 1900. In Barrio del Señor de la Piedad, clay, Laja stone, and wood are crafted into art.

Tierra Nueva’s festive traditions include Santa Cruz, as well as jaripeos and dances in September. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the current dates. The municipality’s culinary specialties include elotes, raspados, tamales, and fried corn gorditas; honey and traditional sweets are also associated with Tierra Nueva.

When looking for a vacation rental, it helps to decide clearly on your focus: should El Nogalito itself be at the center of your trip, or would you like to plan your itinerary around other aspects of the municipality of Tierra Nueva? Use this distinction to choose accommodation based on the goal that matters most for your trip.
