The historic railway station of Estación Catorce is classified as a historic monument. It was built on the México–Laredo main line of the Ferrocarril Nacional Mexicano. Estación Catorce is also a starting point for Wirikuta, the sacred land of the Huichol people. For planning purposes, this means that the focus in the town itself is on railway and community history; the broader Catorce destination encompasses other distinct local histories.
Railway History and Museum
In May 1888, the construction locomotive of the Ferrocarril Nacional reached what would later become Estación de Catorce. In November of the same year, rail service between Mexico and Laredo de Tamaulipas began on the route. Both dates place the station’s origins within the history of the railway line.
The Museo de Estación Catorce was inaugurated to preserve the railway and cultural history of the municipality. At the inauguration, an exhibition of historical photographs showed women who worked at railway stations: some carried heavy loads, while others operated the train. The exhibition is part of the museum’s inauguration history.
Church and Rosa de Plata
The Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús is located in the center of Estación Catorce, at Calle Iturbide No. 6 (78543, Catorce, San Luis Potosí). Service times may change, so check them before visiting.
A local report from August 2006 describes a Rosa de Plata tradition on the last weekend of June: people from Estación Catorce and Monterrey carried the rose on foot in alternating stages and presented it to the parish. If you would like to plan a trip around this event, check the current dates in advance.
Travel Planning
Estación Catorce is a gateway to a tourist area and an important waystation for travelers. A route description from August 2006 outlined a journey from Estación Catorce via Carretas and Los Catorce to Real de Catorce. If you plan to take this route, check current conditions and transport options in advance.
The Broader Setting: Catorce
In the broader Catorce destination, Real de Catorce is a former mining settlement in the Altiplano, founded around 1778. Real de Catorce lies in the Sierra de Catorce in the state of San Luis Potosí, at an altitude of 2,750 meters. The histories of the two places have different emphases: Estación Catorce is associated with its railway station and the main line, while Real de Catorce is associated with its past as a mining settlement.
On November 29, 2012, Real de Catorce was declared a historic monuments zone; it includes 123 historic monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Antigua Casa de Moneda in Real de Catorce was built by Santos de la Maza starting in 1863, opened in 1865, and closed in 1866. The Túnel de Ogarrio passes through solid rock to Real de Catorce and is 2.3 kilometers long.
Religious history also shapes Real de Catorce: the temple dedicated to the Purísima Concepción houses an image of Saint Francis of Assisi, which is venerated every year on October 4 by hundreds of pilgrims.
Choose where to stay based on whether you want your visit to focus on the railway history of Estación Catorce or the mining and historic monument heritage of Real de Catorce.
