The Templo de San José de Pinal de Amoles is almost entirely clad in wood, including its floors, ceilings and walls; only a narrow strip of masonry with niches for religious images is left uncovered. In the historic center, you can walk along cobblestone streets and discover the history, architecture and culture of the Sierra Gorda.
Culture and Architectural History
The building that now houses the Casa de Cultura de Pinal de Amoles was completed in 1947. It first served as a barracks for the federal army, then as a tax office; in 1994, it was converted into the Casa de Cultura.
The first service at the Templo de San José de Pinal de Amoles was held for a deceased person on April 3, 1771. The rear part of the Templo and the sacristy were built around 1773. The Templo was built at the request of the people of Pinal, with the involvement of Bachiller Don José María Rodríguez, the first priest of this church.
The Templo contains religious images and depictions of Pope John Paul II, Saint Joseph, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Lord of Mercy, Our Lady of Sorrows, the 14 Stations of the Cross, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Saint Anthony of Padua, Our Lady of Fátima, the Child Jesus and Saint Francis of Assisi. The Parroquia de San José de Pinal de Amoles preserves traditions rooted in its mountainous surroundings and a religious tradition passed down through generations; it was originally named “Real de San José de Los Amoles.”
In the municipality, local cuisine, traditions and colonial architecture are part of the Pueblo Mágico’s rustic charm.
