When looking for accommodation in Ciénaga, you can also consider the attractions in the municipality of Jalpan de Serra. The municipality offers a range of themes, including mission architecture, archaeology, Pame culture, nature, and local cuisine. The following places and traditions offer concrete starting points for choosing the cultural or scenic focus of your stay.

Missions and their imagery

The Misión de Jalpan was built by Fray Junípero Serra between 1751 and 1758 and dedicated to the Apostle Santiago. The lower section of the façade is particularly striking: it features a unique Hispano-Mexican double-eagle motif depicting an eagle devouring a snake. The mission of Tancoyol is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Luz; its façade is considered the more elaborately decorated of the two in terms of iconography.

Beyond these individual features, the façades of Jalpan and Tancoyol share an imagery that brings together Catholic evangelization and Indigenous worldviews. Architecture enthusiasts can compare a striking detail on the façade in Jalpan with the more elaborate iconography of Tancoyol. The two missions do not tell the same story: their motifs connect them, while their individual designs emphasize different aspects.

Archaeology and history in the Sierra Gorda

The Tancama archaeological site was a settlement of the Huastec culture. It reached its peak between 700 and 900 AD. Three plazas at different elevations define the site, which had a ceremonial and astronomical character. These details give Tancama a different focus from the mission façades: here, the emphasis is on a historic settlement and the layout of its plazas.

In Tancoyol, the Museo Comunitario Pame presents the culture and roots of the Jalpan de Serra community, as well as Pame traditions and distinctive features. Another historical site in the municipality is a fort built in 1576. It served as a prison for more than 50 years and, since 1991, has housed a representative selection of the artistic, cultural, and historical heritage of the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro. These sites offer distinct themes: Tancama introduces you to archaeology, the community museum to Pame culture, and the fort to the history and heritage of the Sierra Gorda.

Nature, trails, and crafts

Near Valle Verde is a cave with an interior of stalactites and stalagmites. A mountain guide from Valle Verde is required for the walk there, which takes approximately 30 minutes. Check locally in advance to confirm guide availability. The municipality also has mountain biking routes for beginners and more challenging trails. Check trail conditions locally. A walk along the banks of the Río Jalpan is also described.

Craft traditions can be found in several places in the municipality. In Soledad de Guadalupe, a group of women makes a variety of ceramic products. In Las Nuevas Flores, several families of Pame origin make crafts from palm leaves. The “El Gavilán” family workshop for saddlery is located in El Rincón de Tancoyol. These examples differ both in the materials used and in their locations.

Regional cuisine and scenery

Cecina is served at Santa Cecilia in Jalpan de Serra. It is prepared with lemon and salt, and preparation begins the day before serving. Cecina can also be purchased there raw to take away. The preparation therefore involves advance work on the previous day, alongside another purchase option that differs from the served version.

Presa Jalpan has been designated a Ramsar site since 2004 and is a place for sport fishing. It adds a landscape and recreation perspective to the cultural themes. To choose among the different options, consider whether you would like to focus primarily on mission architecture, archaeological history, crafts, cuisine, or nature.
