The Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción stands at the highest point in Tetela De Ocampo. Its simple Romanesque layout is shaped like a Latin cross; two continuous barrel vaults and a dome define the building. The cruciform floor plan arranges the long and cross arms in the shape of a cross, while barrel vaults span the space with elongated arches. This also offers a way to appreciate the church through its specific architectural form. Its history also reaches back to the period of the French Intervention: because it was the tallest building in the town center, it was used as a military fortress at the time. The wall surrounding it recalls this use.

Museums and Historical Perspectives

The Casa Museo Posada Olayo focuses on the life and work of María Dolores Posada Olayo. The renowned poet was from Tetela De Ocampo and also developed the internationally widespread Posada-Olayo system for pattern making and garment construction. Her awards are on display in the permanent exhibition room. Here, you can discover both her literary work and a system she developed that became known beyond the town.

The Museo de los Tres Juanes is being renovated. Its objects cover the French Intervention in Mexico, particularly the Battle of May 5, 1862; others recall the mining past of La Cañada. If you are planning a visit, check the renovation status in advance.

Festivals and Cultural Events

The Feast of the Assumption of Mary is celebrated at the Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción on August 15. It includes dances by the Negritos, Tejoneros, Toreros, Santiagueros, Quetzales, Voladores, and Huehues, as well as a Palo encebado. Individual events may vary. The many different dance groups give the festival a broad cultural program, while the Palo encebado is another featured activity.

The 38th regional Peach and Chile en Nogada Fair took place in Tetela De Ocampo from August 11 to 16, 2026. The program included tradition, culture, gastronomy, music, and large-scale events. This particular edition brought together two regional products with a diverse cultural and events program; the dates given refer to August 2026.

Natural Attractions in the Wider Municipality

Other attractions lie outside the town, within the municipality. The Centro Ecoturístico del Amor, also known as “Yoloparque,” is in Tecuicuilco and offers guided trails through hundreds of hectares of forest. A suspension bridge with a viewpoint adds to the experience. In San Vicente, the Centro Turístico Rancho Campestre offers excursions to Cruz and Peña del Águila. This means guided forest trails and excursions to named destinations are available as different ways to explore the wider municipality.

The Grutas de Acocomoca are also outside the town: they are located in the municipality of Carreragco on Mount Tepexacatl. Their cave formations were shaped over thousands of years. Those interested in landscapes and geological formations will find a different focus here than at the town’s museums and church.
