In Zacatlán, a large-scale glass mosaic, historic churches, a floral clock and local food and drink experiences come together. When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between attractions in the city and destinations in the municipality or nearby area. For cultural events, it is also worth checking specific dates, since not every offering is a permanent exhibit.
Art and Architectural History in Zacatlán
The Vitromural Paseo de la Barranca is about 100 meters long and made up of multicolored mosaic pieces and recycled glass. It was inaugurated on January 10, 2015, and adorns the Paseo de la Barranca de los Jilgueros during the day. At night, the headlights of passing vehicles reflect in it, making the mural glow. The same installation therefore reveals different facets depending on the time of day, without taking on a different art form.
A look at the area’s architectural history leads to the Ex Convento Templo Franciscano in the historic center. It was built between 1562 and 1567 and is considered the oldest monastery in the Americas still in operation. The Parroquia de San Pedro y San Pablo adds a different architectural accent with its gray-stone facade: the building dates to the mid-17th century. Inside the church, the Capilla de Guadalupe contains viceregal paintings with legends in Nahuatl and a cedar-wood ceiling.
The Reloj Floral stands in Zacatlán’s civic square and is regarded as one of the city’s most important tourist attractions and as unique of its kind. Its two clock faces each measure five meters in diameter and are decorated with natural flowers. The contrast with the mosaic is a tangible one: there, the materials and the reflection of light shape the impression; here, it is the size of the clock faces and their floral design.
Museum, Stage and Events
At the Museo Regional Comunitario Luciano Márquez Becerra, two permanent exhibition halls offer insight into more than 1,500 pre-Hispanic and historical objects from Zacatlán. There are also spaces for temporary exhibitions, where some recitals are held. If you would like to combine your visit with a particular exhibition or concert, check the current program separately.
Corti Teatro presents short plays lasting 15 to 30 minutes for an audience of 10 or 20 people. Its brief duration and small audience set the format apart from a larger event program; performances may change, so it is advisable to check the current schedule. More than 200 artistic, cultural and sporting events were announced for the 84th Gran Feria de la Manzana 2026, from August 7 to 16. Visitors were welcome. These dates refer to the 2026 edition and are not a current events calendar.
Drinks and Guided Experiences
At Sidrería San Rafael, you can sample apple and peach cider, as well as quince and tejocote liqueurs. Guided tours of the cellars are also offered. Before visiting, check whether tastings and tours are currently available.
La Primavera Vinos y Licores combines a museum with the story of the first winery and liqueur factory founded in Zacatlán. There, you can learn about the original artisanal production process used at this location for almost 100 years. Check the visiting arrangements in advance if you would like to include this stop in your plans.
Another option is Leyendas de Zacatlán: a guided tour with a Franciscan friar that visits various places in the municipality of Zacatlán. Experiences include tastings of locally produced coffee, wine and cider made by Zacatlán residents. The tour therefore covers the municipality, rather than being limited to a visit to a single address in the city.
