Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán combines colonial architecture and religious collections with geologically shaped landscapes. Travelers who want to include cultural history and nature in their trip will find a range of highlights here: the church and former convent, as well as the Las Conchas Geotrail and geological collections. From Oaxaca City, the drive follows Carretera Internacional 190 toward Huajuapan de León. Check road conditions before setting out.

Church, Former Convent, and Collections

The Museo del Ex Convento de Yanhuitlán houses religious and civic objects from the viceregal period. Works on display include a facsimile copy of the Codex Yanhuitlán, four processional archangels, and four colonial-era figures of Christ. These collections give the museum visit an art- and cultural-history focus.

The Centro y Ex Convento de Santo Domingo is considered an outstanding example of 16th-century New Spanish architecture. The church associated with the Museo del Ex Convento de Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán is designated as part of Mexico’s national cultural heritage. Built during the colonial period in 1541 from stone sourced in the region, the church also preserves an original Baroque altarpiece, created before 1575 and attributed to Andrés de la Concha.

The museum is part of the Ruta Dominica in the Mixteca Alta. The Acueducto of Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán also points to the site’s history: the remains of a hydraulic structure dating from the mid-16th century have been preserved. It was built primarily to supply water to the church and convent. The Virgen de la Concepción is housed in the Capilla del Calvario.

A 2017 report describes an exhibition at the Museo Comunitario Rastros y Rostros about the community’s history, customs and traditions, clothing, and social life around 1900. Check before visiting whether the exhibition is still on display in this form.

Geology and Landscape

The Centro de Interpretación del Geoparque in Santo Domingo Yanhuitlán houses collections of fossils, minerals, and soil monoliths that illustrate the region’s geological history. The Las Conchas Geotrail is 3 km long. Its features include badlands, ravines, erosional amphitheaters, paleosols, alluvial landforms, and archaeological ruins. Trail conditions and management may change; check the latest information before making the route a firm part of your plans.

Paraje Las Conchas features rock formations resembling shells and is suitable for hiking and other recreational activities. Paraje Los Álamos (Yudayoo) offers a different perspective on the landscape and is considered a forest reserve and fossil site. Since 2007, soil conservation, reforestation, and rainwater harvesting measures have been carried out there.

The attractions offer different emphases: the geotrail combines geological features with archaeological traces, while the collections and buildings focus on art and cultural history. You can shape your trip around whether you would rather explore landforms or learn about the site’s religious and colonial history.
