A kilometer of golden sand, warm, crystal-clear water and a seasonal connection to migrating humpback whales shape the picture of Mazunte. The beach is part of the town; Punta Cometa is considered its main natural attraction. Cultural events and workshops also offer additional points of interest for planning a trip beyond the coast.
Beach and Nature in Mazunte
The beach in Mazunte is one kilometer long. Its golden sand and warm, crystal-clear water in shades of green and blue give the coastline a distinctive character. The beach is therefore a clear natural and coastal feature to consider when choosing a destination.
Punta Cometa is considered Mazunte’s main natural attraction and is also known as Cerro Sagrado. From December to March, it serves migrating humpback whales as a route and geomagnetic point of orientation. This provides a distinct seasonal reference for the area’s natural features: the beach is described by its physical characteristics, while Punta Cometa’s role is tied to the months when whales migrate.
Festivals, Workshops and Crafts
Mazunte celebrates the feast of its patron saint, Santo PatrĂłn de Esquipulas, every year on January 15. Calendas and parades, live music and fireworks are part of the festivities, along with regional cuisine and a handicraft market. The date is a clear guide for planning a trip; the program may vary from year to year.
The Mazunte International Jazz Festival takes place in the last days of November. The program includes free concerts, art exhibitions, food and yoga workshops. The lineup and additional events may change. The two festivals take place at different times of year and offer different cultural highlights. If you are planning a trip around an event, check the program in advance.
Free community workshops take place year-round in Mazunte. Healers show travelers and schoolchildren how to identify medicinal plants and make simple ointments. Individual sessions may vary. The focus is on hands-on learning about plants and how they are used—a different emphasis from the festive events in January and November.
Visitors can also get hands-on experience with crafts. At Cosméticos Naturales de Mazunte, you can visit the workshop and buy locally made products directly. Artists in Mazunte also offer workshops where visitors can learn weaving or carving live. Which artists take part and when their workshops are held may vary. Alongside cultural events, visitors can therefore choose to explore how things are made and learn about crafts.
Planning Your Journey and Travel Dates
Those traveling by car from Oaxaca de Juárez take approximately three hours and 50 minutes to four hours to reach Mazunte via the new Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway. Traffic and road conditions may affect the actual journey time. Treat the estimated duration as a guide when planning your trip.
January is marked by the patron saint festival, while the last days of November are when the jazz festival takes place. Those more interested in the beach and nature can also consider Punta Cometa’s seasonal connection to the months of December through March. Year-round community workshops are another possible reason to visit; individual sessions may vary.
