Montemorelos can be explored through a variety of themes: nature and wildlife, a large-scale religious artwork, a summit monument, scientific disciplines and experiences tied to specific times. Points of interest include Bioparque Estrella, the Museo del Cristo Gigante, Mirador Montemorelos and the planetarium at Hacienda Guadalupe. There is also a sunrise hot-air balloon ride, as well as the Feria de la Naranja and the Carrera Pentatlón Maratón Montemorelos.
Nature and Landscape in Montemorelos
More than 800 animals representing 50 different species of mammals, reptiles, birds and fish live at Bioparque Estrella in Montemorelos. The biopark is a nature reserve covering more than 300 hectares. The figures for animals and species give an idea of the diversity of its collection; the area figure describes a different scale. Visitors who associate Montemorelos primarily with nature can thus distinguish between the wildlife and the extent of the reserve.
The surrounding area offers its own connection with the landscape: orange groves can be seen along the road before the entrance to Montemorelos, encircling the town. This perspective complements the wildlife and nature reserve with a view of the landscape around the city. The nature theme therefore encompasses both a specifically named place and the surroundings of Montemorelos.
Art, Monuments and Science
The Museo del Cristo Gigante houses a Cristo Yacente, also called the Cristo Gigante. The wooden figure is 11.66 meters long and 3.5 meters wide. Mexican artist Humberto Santiesteban Uviña carved it together with his three sons over more than eleven years. Its dimensions, material and lengthy creation process provide different points of reference for understanding the work: its size and the time spent creating it.
A sculpture honoring José María Morelos y Pavón stands at the summit of Mirador Montemorelos. Its commemorative purpose differs from the depiction of Christ in the museum. While the Cristo Yacente stands out for its dimensions and the lengthy carving process, the sculpture at the Mirador is expressly dedicated to a named person.
The planetarium at Hacienda Guadalupe also houses an observatory for seismology, astronomy and meteorology. These disciplines have a different focus from the artworks and monument: they turn attention to earthquakes, outer space and the weather. Visitors weighing up their travel interests will therefore find a scientific point of interest in Montemorelos alongside its nature and art themes.
Experiences and Event Dates
You can experience the sunrise over Montemorelos on a hot-air balloon ride. As operating conditions may vary, it is advisable to check availability if this ride is a key part of your plans. Unlike the named places, this experience is tied to a particular time of day—the beginning of the day—and may depend on conditions that should be checked in advance.
The traditional Feria de la Naranja is another event of interest. One edition lasted eleven consecutive days in November and attracted more than 50,000 visitors. Dates and duration may vary by edition, so check the specific dates if you want to plan your stay around the festival.
The Carrera Pentatlón Maratón Montemorelos offers a different kind of event: its 46th edition was organized by the Pentatlón Deportivo Militarizado Universitario, Zona Nuevo León y Norte de Tamaulipas, as a 42-kilometer race. More than 100 runners from various municipalities and states took part. The festival and the race thus differ in format; if an event date is important for your trip, check the details for the relevant edition.
