Ahuacatlán combines religious buildings and a historic role along the Camino Real with excursions and hiking trails at the foot of the El Ceboruco volcano. The town is one of four Pueblos Mágicos in the tourist corridor of southern Nayarit. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the cultural sites in Ahuacatlán and excursions to other destinations in the municipality.

History and Buildings in the Town Center

Historically, Ahuacatlán was a stopover for travelers on the Camino Real between the port of San Blas and Guadalajara. The Templo de San Francisco de Asís is located in the historic center of the municipal seat. The former monastery attached to the temple dates from the same period and now serves as the parish house.

Another landmark is the Templo de la Inmaculada Concepción, an imposing 17th-century building with traditional architecture. It is considered one of the town’s significant religious and historic buildings. The Casa de la Cultura Dr. Luis Aranda del Toro, also known simply as the Casa de la Cultura, also has a specific location in the center: it is in the municipal administration complex at the corner of Calle Hidalgo Oriente and 20 de Noviembre.

The Plaza Principal is a gathering place for civic and cultural life. Murals in Ahuacatlán tell the story of local history. The Plaza de Toros “El Recuerdo” is also in the center; it is considered one of the municipality’s most symbolic places and is connected with local identity.

Seasonal Guide

A bullfighting event takes place in Ahuacatlán on October 4, a tradition deeply rooted in Nayarit. The October festivities are held every year; the specific program may change. If this date is important to your travel plans, check the latest event details in advance.

Volcanic Scenery and Swimming Spots in the Municipality

Ahuacatlán lies at the foot of El Ceboruco and offers excursions and hiking trails for adventure tourism. Other destinations in the municipality include two swimming areas with distinct characteristics. Acatique is a rustic spring-fed swimming pool in the town of Valle Verde. It has temperature-controlled pools, two wading pools, palapas, barbecue areas, volleyball courts, children’s play areas, showers, and changing rooms. Check current opening hours before your visit.

Las Tinajas is a natural swimming area south of Santa Isabel, near Chapalilla. Several natural pools there are fed by water that emerges from the rocks. Unlike a swimming pool, this area is defined by its natural pools. Since access conditions may change, check the latest information before your visit.

The two places offer different types of outings: a swimming pool with a range of named facilities, or a natural swimming area with water emerging from the rocks.

Local Cuisine and Getting There

The Jardín de los Hijos Ausentes is opposite the Templo de San Francisco de Asís. The food stalls there serve typical dishes from Ahuacatlán; offerings may vary from stall to stall. If you would like to include local cuisine in your plans, the garden is a useful landmark.

Ahuacatlán can be reached from Tepic or Guadalajara via Federal Highway 15 or the Jala–Compostela highway. When choosing where to stay, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: the history and buildings in Ahuacatlán, or excursions to other destinations within the municipality as well.
