The second consecutive Segunda Copa Indem swimming competition was scheduled for December 13, 2025, at the Complejo Acuático Emiliano Zapata. It was intended for students from the training schools of the Instituto del Deporte y Cultura Física del Estado de Morelos. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these different aspects: a protected area shapes the landscape, while festivals are tied to specific events.

Natural Areas and Regional Orientation

The Sierra Monte Negro is a protected natural area that extends across Emiliano Zapata and neighboring municipalities. Natural landforms also shape the surroundings within the municipality: ravines and natural drainage channels cross some neighborhoods and communities. They are part of the municipality’s ecosystem and form a mosaic of habitats for native species, reptiles, amphibians and migratory birds. This means that both an intermunicipal protected area and smaller landscape features distributed throughout the area are worth keeping in mind.

For travel, an older municipal plan lists the Tejalpa–Zacatepec and Emiliano Zapata–Temixco state highways, as well as the Emiliano Zapata–Colonia Tres de Mayo road, as parts of the regional road network. It also notes the proximity of the Autopista del Sol. Check the current route and road conditions before setting off.

Festivals, Cuisine and Ceramics

The Noveno Festival GastronĂłmico del Taco 2026 took place from May 29 to 31 at the ZĂłcalo Municipal in Emiliano Zapata. Vendors, entrepreneurs and families came together there as part of a local culinary tradition. As a clearly dated example, the festival shows how gastronomy was connected with local participation at an event; it does not indicate a permanently available market or an ongoing events program.

Another event is the Festival de la Cerámica in Colonia Tres de Mayo. A seventh edition brought together more than 90 craftspeople and combined tradition, culture, gastronomy and local products. The festival program included cultural and musical activities, a children’s area with free ceramic-painting workshops, and the participatory mural “Dejando huella en la Tres de Mayo.” These offerings are part of the festival, not year-round activities. Compared with the taco festival, this event focuses on crafts and ceramics, complemented by a family program.

Cultural Heritage and Feast Days

The Capilla de San Francisco in the town of Emiliano Zapata is part of the historical and cultural heritage; it is in poor condition. It should therefore be considered differently from a festival with a time-limited program.

A municipal development program lists DĂa de la Candelaria on February 2 and the feast of the patron saint San Francisco on October 4. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these celebrations, check announcements for your specific travel dates. These dates alone do not provide a current annual events schedule.

Morelos as a Regional Setting

The wider travel destination of Morelos offers cultural attractions beyond Emiliano Zapata. The Pyramid of the Feathered Serpents in Xochicalco has sloping sides decorated with eight large serpents. The Tepozteco archaeological zone in Tepoztlán was the seat of the lordship of Tepoztlán and served as a place of worship for Ometochtli-Tepoxtécatl, the deity of pulque, fertility and the harvest. The climb to the site begins in the Axitla neighborhood; check current trail conditions before visiting.

Chalcatzingo also reveals other facets of Morelos’ history: its central architectural complex includes buildings from the Classic period (200–650), the Epiclassic period (650–900) and the Early Postclassic period (900–1200). The site preserves archaeological remains closely connected to interaction between Olmec culture on the Gulf Coast and in central Mexico. The state’s culinary variety includes tacos de cecina, mole de caderas, carnitas and salsa de chile de árbol. These regional examples provide a broader context, while the festivals and landscapes mentioned above offer a specific connection to Emiliano Zapata.
