Bocaneo can be explored through two distinctive themes: the architectural history of San Pedro and the family history of mouth-blown glass ornaments. The main square, with its arcaded porticoes, adds to the picture of the town. If you’d like to make culture and craftsmanship the focus of your trip, you’ll find concrete ways to do so here.

San Pedro: Architecture Across Several Centuries

The Church of San Pedro is a historic 16th-century building that retains its original masonry walls. Its present-day vault dates from the late 18th century. The atrium preserves three traditional entrances. At its center stands a stone cross bearing symbols of the Passion; its base is dated 1727.

The neoclassical altar houses an image of Saint Peter that comes from Toledo, Spain. The tower comprises three sections and ends in an octagonal lantern and a stone cross. San Pedro offers the chance to view a range of architectural features: from the atrium and its cross to the altar furnishings and the multi-section tower.

The Square and the Town’s Early History

Bocaneo is a settlement that existed before the Conquest. The arcaded porticoes around the main square preserve part of the town’s distinctive character. Juan Bautista Figueroa helped build Bocaneo’s churches and cemeteries. In 1780, the church and sacristy were praised for their cleanliness and ornamentation.

The town’s history is reflected in more than individual architectural features: the main square and the surviving memories of its churches and cemeteries are also among the place’s defining themes.

Glass Ornaments: Craftsmanship and Planning Your Visit

A report from November 2025 described a family business in San Pedro Bocaneo where glass ornaments were made by blowing and metallizing the glass, then painting and decorating each piece individually. According to the report, the family had been carrying on the craft for around 50 years; the producer’s parents had started it.

At the time, the workshop offered ornaments in various sizes for both retail and wholesale. It also opened its doors to members of the public, who could buy ornaments there. If you’d like to include a visit to the workshop in your plans, check in advance whether visits are currently possible.

Getting Your Bearings Around Bocaneo

The town is also located on the connecting route between Zinapécuaro and the Morelia–Maravatío federal highway. For orientation, read the time and distance figures separately: the approximately 40 minutes refers to Morelia, while the 500 meters refers to Zinapécuaro.

A Historical Trail of Bread

Culinary history is also part of Bocaneo’s cultural identity. One historical theory holds that a type of breadmaking spread from San Pedro Bocaneo to Acámbaro. It used sugar, pork lard, pulque, and flour. This connection adds a culinary thread to the town’s architectural and craft history.
