The Parish of San Francisco and Its Grounds
The parish of San Francisco is the most important religious building in Tenancingo. Its grounds are largely laid out as paths and gardens leading to a small plaza and the entrance to the church. The layout of the paths and the sequence of garden, plaza and entrance are therefore also part of the architectural complex.
In the immediate area, this is the only church that appears to have origins dating back to the 16th century. The parish thus offers a cultural experience distinct from textile craftsmanship, which is shaped by production stages and the division of labor.
Rebozos and Handcrafted Products
Various types of rebozos are made in Tenancingo. Making a rebozo involves 14 demanding steps, divided among five specialists. These figures give a clear sense of the division of labor in the process: the craft does not consist of a single step, but of multiple specialized contributions.
The Escuela del rebozo teaches this 14-step production process. If you would like to include this place in your plans, check current visiting arrangements in advance. Another place to find crafts is Tiendas CASART in Tenancingo. The shop introduces visitors to the significance and techniques behind the items on offer. It also sells artisan-made foods and drinks, including liqueurs, mezcal, coffee, salsas and jams. It is best to check Tiendas CASART’s opening hours before visiting.
Obispo: A Specialty Prepared Two Ways
Obispo comes from Tenancingo and is a sausage made with pork and spices. It is offered in a regular and a special preparation. The special version includes, among other ingredients, raisins, pine nuts and almonds. You can also get to know this specialty through its different preparations: the special version has a specific combination of ingredients that distinguishes it from the regular one.
