To get your bearings in the broader destination of Distrito Federal, consider its distinct cultural and landscape themes: Mexica history, museums, art, a large urban forest, and the lake landscape of Xochimilco. Before your trip, you can weigh whether history, art, or spending time in green spaces best suits your interests.

Mexica History at the Templo Mayor

One of the historical attractions in the broader destination of Distrito Federal is the Templo Mayor, in the heart of present-day Ciudad de México. It was the religious and political center of the Mexica and was dedicated to the gods Tlåloc and Huitzilopochtli. Its remains include a tzompantli altar and the Casa de las Águilas; among the site's treasures is the monolithic effigy of the goddess Coyolxauhqui. These details emphasize different aspects: the dedication points to its religious dimension, while the temple's historical role also reveals its political significance.

Textiles, Collections, and Art

The Museo Nacional de AntropologĂa is considered one of the most important museums for preserving Mexico's Indigenous heritage. The textile gallery offers a closer look at one part of this subject: it contains 512 pieces across eight thematic areas. It explores clothing techniques and the processing of raw materials. This organization draws attention not only to the pieces, but also to the processes and materials associated with clothing.

The Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes offers a different perspective on art history. It opened on November 29, 1934, as the Museo de Artes PlĂĄsticas and was Mexico's first art museum. Its permanent exhibition features 17 murals by seven Mexican artists, created between 1928 and 1963. This period begins before the museum opened and extends beyond that date. The history of the institution and the murals' period of creation are therefore clearly related in time.

Chapultepec: History and Green Space

The Castillo de Chapultepec can also be understood through its different historical stages. The magnificent building was constructed between 1785 and 1787 as a country retreat, designed at the order of the Viceroy of New Spain, Bernardo de GĂĄlvez. In 1939, a presidential decree designated the Castillo as a museum to preserve collections and objects belonging to notable figures in Mexican history; it opened for this purpose in September 1944. The Museo Nacional de Historia Castillo de Chapultepec is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 09:00 to 17:00. Check the hours again before your trip.

Bosque de Chapultepec covers more than 800 hectares, divided into four sections. In 2003, a decree designated it an Área de Valor Ambiental in the Bosque Urbano category. The First Section has areas surrounded by nature for running, walking, and cycling. This landscape theme thus encompasses both the forest's size and designated category, as well as specific recreational activities in a particular section.

The Chapultepec and Auditorio metro stations are listed as access points for the First Section: Chapultepec is on the pink line, and Auditorio is on the orange line. Check transit conditions shortly before you travel. This gives you two named stations and lines to help you find your way, without making assumptions about other travel conditions.

Xochimilco and the History of the Lakes

The lake landscape of Xochimilco preserves the only surviving trace of the traditional settlement of the lagoons of the Basin of Mexico before the Spanish conquest. This historical context sets the landscape apart from the museums' institutional and architectural themes and those of the Castillo.

The history of Casa del Lago also reflects the development of Bosque de Chapultepec. Its origins date back to 1906. At that time, by order of Porfirio DĂaz, Bosque de Chapultepec was transformed into a public park for the celebrations marking the centennial of independence; the lakes at the foot of the castle hill were created at the same time. The date thus connects Casa del Lago's origins with the park's development at that time.
