Works by José Clemente Orozco from 1930 to 1937 give the Museo Arqueológico de Ciudad Guzmán a special connection to art. Together with archaeological materials, colonial pieces and historical photographs, the museum offers several distinct ways to explore the city’s culture.

Art and History in Ciudad Guzmán

The Museo Arqueológico de Ciudad Guzmán displays archaeological materials from the cultures of western Mexico, colonial pieces, photographs of historical figures and sketches by Orozco. It also features works by the Jalisco-born painter, created between 1930 and 1937. The museum thus brings archaeological and historical collections together with works by a major artist from the state. Visitors interested in Orozco will find a direct connection to his work here, while the museum’s scope extends beyond painting.

Visiting hours for the Museo Arqueológico de Ciudad Guzmán are listed as Tuesday through Sunday, from 09:00 to 17:00. Check the hours before your visit.

The Hotel Zapotlán is also one of Ciudad Guzmán’s most historically significant buildings. In 1913, Venustiano Carranza arrived there to rest. Alongside the museum’s collections, this episode provides another historical point of interest: one focuses on a specific event at a building, while the other showcases a variety of objects and artworks.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Zapotlán el Grande

In the wider destination of Zapotlán el Grande, the Museo de Sitio Juan José Arreola displays the writer’s personal belongings, original furniture, documents, photographs and books. The Casa Taller Literario Juan José Arreola was designed and built by Juan José Arreola. It has heritage, artistic and historical value because of its significance to the contemporary history of Ciudad Guzmán and the municipality of Zapotlán el Grande. The two places have different focuses: the museum brings together items from Arreola’s life, while the Casa Taller itself is connected to his authorship and its historical significance.

Festivals and Culinary Traditions

The Festival Cultural de la Ciudad takes place every year in August. It commemorates the anniversary of the Hispanic founding of Zapotlán el Grande. August is therefore a recurring cultural highlight for trip planning; check the specific event dates and program before traveling.

The Festival Nacional de la Tostada celebrates the tostada as a traditional dish of southern Jalisco and part of the local gastronomic identity. Producers and cooks offer a wide variety of tostadas with different ingredients and preparations. The festival thus brings regional food culture together with a broad selection of variations; the program may change.

The Feria Zapotlán takes place in October, at the same time as the patron saint festivities. It was formally established on October 13, 1925, and is now considered the most important fair in the southern region of Jalisco. Its program includes cultural, sporting, social, gastronomic and commercial events for all audiences. This gives the Feria a different character from the August Festival Cultural: it brings different types of events together in one fair.

From October 13 to 23, religious celebrations are held in honor of Señor San José, who has been venerated as the patron saint of Zapotlán el Grande since 1749. They are considered the municipality’s most important religious celebrations and attract thousands of worshippers and visitors. The program includes processions, solemn Masses, artistic performances and devotional activities. Before traveling, check the current dates and programs for the festivities you plan to attend.

Two established events in particular can help you choose when to travel: the annual Festival Cultural takes place in August, while the Feria Zapotlán and the festivities for Señor San José take place in October. The tostada, in turn, offers its own culinary insight into the traditions of southern Jalisco.
