Ajijic is located along the shores of Lake Chapala. A beach and a pier are among the options by the water: visitors can rent a boat at the pier and go out on the lake. The town also features art, cultural offerings and trails into nature. The aspects that interest you most can help shape your stay.

Ajijic’s Townscape and Culture

Cobblestone streets, colorful houses, art galleries and shops selling handicrafts are among the features that shape the town. The Mural de los Muertos is located on Calle Marcos Castellanos. It is a specific place to visit if you would also like to discover Ajijic through its public art.

Several cultural institutions are identified as offering cultural activities. The Centro Cultural Ajijic is located in JardĂn Norte, opposite the main square. Its activities include classical concerts featuring young musicians, puppet theater and theatrical performances. The center also hosts changing exhibitions of painting, photography and sculpture. The Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera is located at Boulevard De JinXi 110, in the Ajijic Centro neighborhood. It offers a range of artistic activities and varied content for the local community and visitors.

The Ajijic Museo de Arte is dedicated to preserving, restoring and exhibiting art from Ajijic. In its first phase, part of the permanent collection was shown there. The Tianguis de Ajijic offers something different: it takes place on Wednesday mornings and features fresh produce, fish and seafood, handicrafts, jewelry, clothing, shoes and other goods. Tejuino, pizza, tacos, tostadas and tamales are also available there. If you would like to plan a visit to the market, Wednesday morning is the time specified.

The Lake, Walks and Nature

You can enjoy a walk outdoors along the MalecĂłn de Ajijic. There are also sports courts and a skate park for skateboards and bicycles. The lakeshore thus offers both leisurely exercise and designated sports and skating facilities, without requiring you to follow a specific program.

The ascent of Cerro de Chupinaya follows a route with panoramic views. Another nature stop is El Tepalo: during the rainy season, from June to September, the stream features several waterfalls and small pools. Water levels depend on rainfall. At a normal pace, the walk from the entrance to the last waterfall, also called the third waterfall, takes about 20 minutes; terrain and walking time may vary. These stated time and seasonal details can help you distinguish this hike from other activities in town.

Guided hikes are also available. Brigada Xupinayatl offers tours to Chupinaya, El Tepalo, Mesa del Ocote, Tecuan and other places in the protected natural area. The zones listed include Ajijic, Chapala, San Juan, Trojes and Cañada. Ajijic is therefore one of several zones mentioned. In the La Floresta neighborhood of Ajijic, there is also a place where you can go horseback riding and rent horses; rides take you through Ajijic or along the lakeshore.

The offerings range from culture and the market to walks, hikes and horseback rides. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether you want your days to focus on the Wednesday market, cultural activities, or time by the water and in nature. The institutions, activities and natural attractions mentioned offer different starting points without prescribing a set daily itinerary.
