Mining History and Baroque Architecture
Zimapán is also called “Capital Minera” (“Mining Capital”). The name is associated with the area’s mining wealth and its growth during the colonial period. It offers a historical perspective on the town that differs from the themes of architectural history and religious architecture.
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista in Zimapán was built between 1754 and 1824. It is considered one of the finest examples of religious Baroque architecture.
Cultural Themes in the Town
The Centro Cultural Regional de Zimapán is home to the state’s first school affiliated with INBA. Its interdisciplinary focus encompasses music, dance, visual arts and theater. These four areas give the school a broad cultural profile. This is a different point of reference for understanding the town’s themes than the church: here, the focus is on artistic disciplines, while there it is on architectural history and religious architecture.
Nature Destinations in the Municipality
At the municipal level, there are also destinations with different points of interest. At Cañón de San Cristóbal y Las Adjuntas, you can go hiking and canyoning. The Grutas de Xajhá are associated with clear thermal waters. La Encarnación is located in the heart of Parque Nacional Los Mármoles. The destinations therefore differ in terms of activities, their connection with thermal waters and their location in a national park. If you plan to visit one of them, check the directions separately.
