A 16th-century former convent, an 1887 chapel and a community museum offer different ways to explore the history of Atotonilco el Grande. There is also a traditional market on two days of the week and the Feria del Calvario. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between cultural and historical highlights and visits tied to a specific date.

Architectural History and Visual Art

The Ex-Convento de San Agustín was built between 1542 and 1562. Its rather simple Plateresque-style façade features paired columns, medallions and a distinctive open chapel. The construction period provides a historical context, while the described façade elements offer specific architectural details. This makes it possible to place the building in context both by date and by design.

Murals depicting episodes from the Passion of Christ have been preserved in the Ex-Convento. On the staircase is a series of paintings depicting scenes from the life of Saint Augustine, surrounded by six Greek philosophers. The iconographic program thus includes both Passion scenes and depictions of Saint Augustine and his circle.

The Capilla de El Calvario was built in 1887 in the center of Atotonilco el Grande. Compared with the construction period of the Ex-Convento, this is a significantly later historical reference point. The chapel and the former convent therefore offer distinct time markers for the town’s history.

Local History at the Museum

The Museo Comunitario “El Jagüey” is located in the center and presents local history through books from the collections of Antonio Peñafiel and Víctor Manuel Ballesteros, as well as photographs of local residents. The books and photographs offer different ways of exploring history. While the Ex-Convento and chapel focus mainly on architecture and visual art, the museum provides another point of entry into local history.

Feria, Patron Saint’s Day and Market

The feast day of the Capilla de El Calvario is held every year on the first Friday of Lent. The annual Feria del Calvario also takes place on that Friday in honor of the Señor de Tezoquipan. The Feria includes a Festival de Mole de Guajolote. If you are planning a visit around an event, the date during Lent is an important planning reference; check the dates for the relevant year before finalizing your trip.

A traditional market is also held in the center of Atotonilco el Grande on Thursdays and Sundays. If you would like to plan a market visit, confirm the market days locally before a specific visit. This helps you distinguish between a stay tied to an annual festival date and one tied to a particular day of the week.

A municipal notice dated January 13, 2025, announced planned guided tours of the Ex-Convento de San AgustĂn de Hipona. The tours were to explain aspects of the architecture and history. Before your trip, check whether a tour is available on your chosen date.
