In Coyoacán, different themes lead to different discoveries: Kahlo museums explore art and family history, historic sites span several centuries, and the Viveros de Coyoacán are used for running and training. The Mercado de Coyoacán adds another distinctive touch. When making your selection, consider whether you are particularly interested in museums, architectural history, outdoor exercise or local food.

Kahlo and the worlds behind the art

Casa Azul is located on Calle de Londres in Coyoacán. In 1958, four years after the death of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, it was converted into a museum. The Museo Casa Kahlo offers a different perspective on the Kahlo family: the house presents her domestic world, genealogy and private life.

The original furnishings have been preserved in the kitchen and dining room of the Museo Casa Kahlo. The kitchen also contains the mural “El mesón de los gorriones,” painted directly on the wall by Frida Kahlo. The genealogy room displays the family tree, as well as historical photographs and portraits of Guillermo Kahlo and Matilde Calderón. The Estudio de Guillermo Kahlo and the Cuarto Oscuro feature historic cameras, original negatives and architectural photographs from the Porfiriato era. Living spaces, family history and photography offer different ways to explore the history of the family.

The Museo Casa de León Trotsky has largely preserved the house as it was during Trotsky’s time there. The reconstructed room where the assassination attempt took place still contains the chair in its position at the time, the papers on the table and the library.

Historic sites and museum collections

The Historic Monuments Zone of Coyoacán includes 50 buildings of historic value, built between the 16th and 19th centuries. The Capilla San Antonio Panzacola is also among the historic sites: it belongs to the Franciscan order and was built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Plaza Hidalgo is one of the open spaces in the monuments zone. Cultural events are held there, including Día de Muertos altars, the Tamal Fair and the celebration of the Independence Cry. The dates of individual events vary; check them in advance if you plan to time your visit around one.

At the Museo Anahuacalli, the architecture presents a spatial depiction of the Indigenous cosmos: the underworld is on the ground floor, the earthly world on the first floor and the upper world on the top floor. Diego Rivera’s collection comprises nearly 60,000 pieces, including objects from western Mexico, Teotihuacan and the Sierra de Oaxaca. The stated size may change over time.

The Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones is located in San Diego Churubusco, in the borough of Coyoacán. It was established in the former Churubusco monastery, a historically significant site of the 1847 battle against North American invaders. The museum is two blocks from General Anaya station on Metro Line 2. Check the Metro’s current operating conditions before setting out.

Green spaces, exercise and local food

The Viveros de Coyoacán are a popular place for running and training. They can be reached via Viveros station on Metro Line 3; check the current operating conditions here as well. The Viveros nursery today includes just over 20 different species of forest trees. This offers a different focus for time outdoors than a museum visit: here, the emphasis is on running and training, as well as the nursery.

The Mercado de Coyoacán is known for tostadas with guisados and fried quesadillas. Individual vendors and their offerings may change. If you are planning a market visit for these dishes, ask locally what is currently available. The Museo Frida Kahlo also offers workshops specifically designed for children, introducing them to the painter’s world and the importance of her art to Mexican culture. As program availability may change, check current information before your visit.
