Mining history is a common thread running through a stay in San Juan de Sabinas. Nueva Rosita, the administrative seat of San Juan de Sabinas, was established and grew through coal mining and the arrival of the railroad. Nueva Rosita’s railway station is a symbol of the mining boom. The town’s history can therefore be explored through both its industrial heritage sites and its historic buildings.

Industrial History and Architecture

The Chimenea de Nueva Rosita was completed on August 14, 1929. It is approximately 150 meters tall and was once the tallest structure in Latin America. As an industrial symbol of the Región Carbonífera, it is a prominent landmark associated with the town’s mining history.

The townscape also preserves historic details: in the center of Nueva Rosita, early 20th-century townhouses with balconies and architecturally significant details of heritage value have been preserved. Other historical markers include the Templo de San Juan, built during the 19th and 20th centuries, and the Templo del Sagrado CorazĂłn, dating from 1925. The PanteĂłn Municipal dates from the 19th century, and the Ignacio Zaragoza school from the 20th century. La MansiĂłn adds to this selection as a factory established in the 20th century.

Heritage and Crafts

The Museo HistĂłrico de Nueva Rosita preserves mining-related exhibits and photographs of the first groups of workers. Its collection brings together objects from the mining history and images of the people who belonged to the early worker groups.

The Taller de AlfarerĂa: Arte Familiar offers a different way to learn about local history. Visitors can find clay pieces there, including pig-shaped piggy banks and figures of La Chimenea. In the family of don Tereso Delgado and his son Fernando, the pottery tradition is passed down from generation to generation. If you plan to visit the workshop, confirm availability beforehand.

Walks and Mountain Biking

In Ejido Santa MarĂa, a natural area with sabino trees and clear water lies along a riverbank. Benches and shade are also part of this spot, which invites visitors to take a walk. Check access and seasonal water conditions before visiting.

For mountain biking, routes from Nueva Rosita follow the RĂo Sabinas and the Sierra. This offers different ways to spend time outdoors: a walk in a natural area with places to sit and find shade, or a ride on MTB routes. Check trail conditions before cycling.

Dates and Planning Your Stay

A commemorative event marking the city’s founding takes place in May. The Astro Feria takes place in August and includes livestock and industrial exhibitions. If you plan your stay around either event, check the current dates and program beforehand.

When looking for a vacation rental, you can first decide whether you want to devote most of your time to mining history, crafts or outdoor activities. Then compare the location of the specific property with your planned activities; this will keep your accommodation choice aligned with your own travel plans.
