El Porvenir de Velasco Suárez is the administrative seat of the Municipality of El Porvenir and lies 2,882 meters above sea level. Two defining features of the town are its religious traditions, with clearly specified feast days, and the coniferous forest, with viewpoints on the outskirts. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish between the town and the municipality as a whole: some topics relate directly to El Porvenir, while others concern the larger administrative unit.

Religious Festivals in the Town

Holy Week in El Porvenir includes a popular celebration with a novena, procession, and offering, as well as a reenactment of the three falls of Christ. It therefore brings together several forms of religious observance. Other traditional dates include the Feast of the Virgen de la Candelaria on February 2, La Santa Cruz on May 3, and the popular fair in honor of San Juan Bautista on June 24. The Parroquia del Señor de las Tres Caídas is also located in El Porvenir.

Nature on the Outskirts and in the Municipality

On the outskirts of town is the Parque Ecológico de El Porvenir, a coniferous forest with viewpoints. A visitor description from 2024 mentions nature trails, densely leafy trees, and fresh air, and describes the park as suitable for walks and enjoying nature. Unlike this park on the outskirts, Cascada El Chorro is in the surrounding area: it is located 7 kilometers from the municipal seat, between Malé and Las Pilas.

At the municipal level, a broader landscape opens up. From the settlement of Mira Valle in the Municipality of El Porvenir, you can see the Chimalapa and Carrizal canyons, with the city of Motozintla in the background. The Municipality of El Porvenir is also part of the Cordón Pico El Loro-Paxtal ecological conservation zone.

Ejido Canadá is also associated with forested landscapes reminiscent of Canada; it is considered suitable for camping and horseback riding. The Centro Turístico Ejido Canadá is associated with recreational activities, relaxation, and enjoying nature. These attractions complement the coniferous forest on the outskirts with topics located at the municipal level.

Culture and Events in the Municipality

In the Municipality of El Porvenir, the majority of the population belongs to the Mam ethnic group; traditions, customs, and language are preserved. A 2025 report describes Día de Plaza as a trading event in the municipality and links its origins to the founding of the town in 1890. For the event described, the report mentions traders and residents from throughout the Sierra, as well as residents of the Costa and Soconusco, who are also drawn to it.

A report from August 2025 also states that the potato harvest festival in the municipality resumed after a five-year hiatus; it traces the festival’s history back to 1942. This dated report adds a look at the potato harvest to the local festivities without specifying a future event date.

Finding Accommodation and Getting Around

When looking for a hotel, first consider whether your trip will focus mainly on the festivals and Parque Ecológico in town, or also include destinations at the municipal level. A municipal plan from 2008 to 2010 lists a taxi connection from the municipal seat to Cascada El Chorro. For the municipality, it also lists door-to-door taxis and combi services from El Porvenir to neighboring municipalities. Since these transport details come from an older plan, confirm current connections locally in advance.
