Comitán De Domínguez combines historic architecture with museums, cultural events and local cuisine. The cityscape brings together single-story buildings and striking religious structures with the natural landscape of the Valle de Comitán, surrounded by mountains. This offers a variety of ways to plan your trip, with a focus on architectural history, archaeological and art collections, literature, performing arts or a culinary visit.

Architecture and historic neighborhoods

The historic monuments zone of Comitán covers 1.12 km², 84 city blocks and 243 historic buildings. Notable structures include the Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, built between the 16th and 17th centuries. It is an example of Mudéjar architecture with Arab influences. The Templo de San Caralampio offers a different style: it was completed in 1868 in the Neoclassical style. The Teatro de la Ciudad Junchavín is also housed in a building from the mid-19th century, designed in the Neoclassical style of the Porfiriato.

The Barrio de las 7 Esquinas preserves many examples of traditional Comiteco culture and is defined by the Templo de San Caralampio. Visitors interested in architecture can explore the different periods and styles; the neighborhood adds its own cultural character to this focus.

Museums: archaeology, art and literature

The Museo Arqueológico de Comitán explores the development of the Maya peoples in the highlands of Chiapas through the heyday of Chinkultic and Tenam Puente. Its two permanent exhibition rooms and one temporary exhibition room tell the pre-Hispanic history of the highlands up to the arrival of the Spanish. The artifacts on display include objects made of stone, bone, alabaster and shells.

At the Casa Museo Dr. Belisario Domínguez Palencia, personal belongings, medical instruments and furniture are displayed alongside correspondence addressed to Belisario Domínguez and his family. The Museo de Arte Hermila Domínguez de Castellanos has three permanent exhibition halls and a permanent painting collection. It includes works by Rufino Tamayo, José Luis Cuevas, José Guadalupe Posada and Francisco Toledo, among others. The Museo Rosario Castellanos focuses on literature: exhibits include poems, photographs and a wax sculpture of Rosario Castellanos; the collection also includes poetry, short stories, novels, plays and essays.

Cultural program and events

The Centro Cultural Rosario Castellanos is housed in a former Dominican convent dating to 1552. Its architecture and murals make it a major tourist attraction in Comitán. The 320-seat Roberto Cordero Citalán Auditorium hosts theater performances, film series, concerts, piano recitals and dance performances. The cultural center also has a 90 m² space for temporary exhibitions.

Workshops at the Centro Cultural Rosario Castellanos range from folkloric dance and classical or popular guitar to visual arts, marimba, film, literature, chess, piano and theater. Specific workshop dates may change; check them when planning. The cultural center has also hosted 16 editions of the Festival Internacional Rosario Castellanos. This festival history is distinct from the specific dates of the current cultural program.

The Museo de Arte Hermila Domínguez de Castellanos also offers workshops, in this case in visual arts for children and young people. If you plan to visit around February, the festival in honor of San Caralampio is another cultural highlight: it takes place from February 10 to 20. An annual pilgrimage is held on February 10.

Cuisine in Comitán

The Mercado 1º de Mayo offers a culinary experience featuring Atol de granillo and Jocoatol, tamales, broths, Chinculguajes, Mondongo, tongue in Pebre, traditional sweets and other local dishes. This gives cuisine its own place in trip planning, alongside the architectural and cultural attractions.
