Campeche’s cultural highlights include its preserved fortifications, Maya collections and maritime archaeology. The historic center retains its city walls and a fortification system built to protect against attacks from the sea. The museums offer a further perspective, with examples of Maya architecture and sculpture, as well as objects from archaeological contexts in the region’s marine waters. To plan your visit, you can start by asking yourself which of these highlights interests you most.

UNESCO Heritage and City Fortifications

UNESCO lists the historic fortified city of Campeche as a World Heritage Site under reference 895. It was inscribed in 1999 under criteria (ii) and (iv); the core zone covers 181 hectares. The city walls and fortification system bring the center’s defensive architecture to life. They were built to protect the city from attacks from the sea. The Baluarte de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is part of this history: it is the largest of the eight bastions in the city walls, built to protect the Villa San Francisco de Campeche from pirates.

Maya Architecture and Sculpture

The Museo de Arquitectura Maya is located in the Baluarte de la Soledad. Its collection includes examples of Maya architecture and sculpture from the Petén, Río Bec, Chenes and Puuc traditions. It offers a perspective on both architectural forms and sculpture. Each of the four named traditions gives the examples its own art-historical context. If you want to explore Campeche’s cultural heritage, this collection offers a direct look at different forms of Maya cultural expression.

Maritime Archaeology and Historical Weapons

The Museo de Arqueología Subacuática San José el Alto offers a different collection focus. It contains objects from archaeological contexts discovered in the marine waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean. Six galleries currently open to visitors also display weapons dating from the 16th to the 19th century. Maritime archaeological finds and historical weapons thus form two distinct themes within the same museum. As operating details may change, check the latest museum information before your visit.

Fuerte de San Miguel and a Second Fort

The Museo de Arqueología Maya at Fuerte de San Miguel is housed in a 17th-century structure. It was part of an outer defensive system comprising two forts on hills and four coastal batteries. The museum displays funerary jadeite masks from Calakmul and funerary ceramic figurines from Jaina. The collection thus presents two types of burial objects from different places of origin. You can reach Fuerte de San Miguel via Campeche–Lerma Road No. 180 and Avenida Escénica; it is accessible by public transport or car. Check local traffic conditions before setting out.

Fuerte de San José el Alto is a separate site. From its rampart, you can look out over the marine horizon. The two forts represent different aspects of fortified Campeche: at Fuerte de San Miguel, you can combine a visit to the military structure with the Maya collection, while at San José el Alto, the view from the rampart is the feature described.

Domestic Life at Centro Cultural Casa No. 6

Casa No. 6 offers another cultural perspective in the historic center, opposite the main park. The house was restored in 1998 and converted into a cultural center; its design explores 19th-century ways of life and customs. Centro Cultural Casa No. 6 also features a reconstruction of a typical home of Campeche’s wealthy residents from the 18th and 19th centuries. Alongside city walls, forts and archaeological collections, the focus thus also extends to domestic life and social customs. This change of theme can help you explore Campeche according to your interests and decide what to focus on during your cultural trip.
