Architectural heritage, crafts and guava cuisine shape a visit to Calvillo. There are also various ways to explore the town on foot, as well as a nearby waterfall. Each destination offers a different focus for planning your trip.

Church, townscape and crafts

The Señor San José Temple, also known as Señor del Salitre, stands at the center of the settlement, with its main façade facing the garden. Its construction dates back to the grounds of the former Hacienda San Nicolás, which belonged to Señor José Calvillo: construction of the temple began there in 1772. The dome originally built above the central nave was completed in 1884. The current dome spans all three church naves.

The Andador Matamoros, popularly known as Calle de las Graditas, was laid out in 1980 and remodeled in 2016. Calle de las Graditas is a visitor attraction in Calvillo Pueblo Mágico.

At the Casa del Artesano Calvillo, at Zaragoza 300 in the Centro, crafts by artisans from Calvillo are displayed and sold across 500 square meters. The selection includes textiles, woodwork and willow basketry, as well as costume jewelry and jewelry featuring semi-precious stones such as opal. It also includes scented candles and leatherwork. A visit offers insight into a range of craft materials and forms.

The Museo Nacional de los Pueblos Mágicos (MUNPUMA) is located at Juárez 312 in the Centro. It preserves and presents the cultural heritage of Mexico’s 121 Pueblos Mágicos. While the Casa del Artesano displays and sells crafts by artisans from Calvillo, the museum focuses on the cultural heritage of these towns throughout Mexico.

Art and walking routes

The Ruta del Artista features 17 works of art, including murals and sculptures. They are spread across streets and lanes near the bus station and the Santuario de Guadalupe, in the eastern, southeastern and southern parts of the center. The guided walking tour is about 1.5 kilometers long and takes approximately two hours. Check whether the tour is running before you travel.

The Andador Juárez offers a different kind of stroll: from Calvillo’s main plaza, there is an accessible walking route with shops and areas for a leisurely wander. The two routes therefore differ in character and duration: the Ruta del Artista is a guided art walk that takes approximately two hours, while the Andador Juárez combines shops with peaceful areas for strolling.

Guava products and local cuisine

A wide variety of guava products is made in Calvillo Pueblo Mágico. These include sweets, jams and jellies, guava paste, liqueurs and creams, as well as empanadas, cookies, sorbets and cakes. Concentrates, guavas in syrup, fresh guavas, flakes, extract and guava mole are also among them. Visitors can try local specialties such as chamucos, guava cake and traditional sorbets in Calvillo. The vendors and products available may vary.

A nearby waterfall

Cascada El Garruño is in the Sierra del Laurel, south of Calvillo, on the border between Aguascalientes and Jalisco and a few hundred meters from the community of El Garruño. Access is via an unpaved road. From there, park the vehicle and walk to the waterfall. Seasonal trail conditions may vary; allow time for the walk and check conditions before your visit.
