Explore Saint-Joseph according to your interests: in the Bourg, Jardin du Centenaire is a place for peaceful walks, while the marked Boucle de Rabuchon is a moderate hike. Religious heritage can be found at Croix Mission and in the history of the Grotte de Lourdes; Saint-Joseph Church adds architecture and stained-glass windows to the picture. When planning your visit, you can focus on a peaceful walk, a hike or cultural history.

Croix Mission, Holy Week and the Church

At the entrance to the Bourg, a statue of Christ is attached to a cross at Croix Mission. The evangelisation campaign in Saint-Joseph took place before 1925; Croix Mission was erected afterwards. During Holy Week, worshippers bring flowers there or light candles. Its origins and recurring religious practices give the site different historical and religious associations.

The Grotte de Lourdes is also part of the history of the municipality of Saint-Joseph: when it was inaugurated in 1904, it was one of the most visited pilgrimage sites during Holy Week. The historical references differ: the Grotte is associated with its 1904 inauguration, while Croix Mission is associated with the campaign before 1925 and its subsequent construction.

In the municipality of Saint-Joseph, Saint-Joseph Church combines a basilica style with Gothic influences; its two bell towers were added in the 1930s. Three stained-glass windows at the far end of the church, opposite the main entrance, depict Christian scenes. They are dedicated to “Apothéose de Saint-joseph”, “La Sainte Famille de Nazareth” and “La Gloire du Christ”. The style, later-added towers and window subjects each offer a different perspective, from the architectural design to the Christian themes depicted.

Garden and outdoor activities

Jardin du Centenaire is located in the Bourg on the banks of the Rivière Blanche and is a place for peaceful walks. Bamboo, palm trees, balisiers and alpinias grow there. The garden is therefore suited to a peaceful stroll, unlike a moderate hike.

The municipality’s natural landscapes are suited to river swimming, hiking, picnics and wellness in nature. The forests around Cœur Bouliki are also suitable for hiking. You can choose between a walk in the Bourg and a range of activities in the natural landscapes of Saint-Joseph.

One specifically named hike is the marked Boucle de Rabuchon. It is 5.8 km long, takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes and has an elevation gain of 380 metres. The route is moderate and suitable for hikers in good physical condition. The distance, approximate duration, elevation gain and difficulty level each offer different guidance for planning your day. As conditions can change, check them before your hike.
