A yacht club by the water, sailing courses for all experience levels and a rich history of villas give Ta' Xbiex several distinct points of interest. If you choose a stay based on its maritime setting and local history, you can explore sailing, architecture and church history as different aspects of the area.
Marina and sailing
Ta' Xbiex is a peninsula that lies close to land on all sides. Its specific connection to sailing is the Ta' Xbiex Marina. The Royal Malta Yacht Club is located there by the water and offers sailing courses for all experience levels. The geographical setting and the courses on offer provide two different points of reference when choosing a destination with a maritime connection: the peninsula situates the area geographically, while the courses offer a specific sailing activity.
Villas and diplomatic history
Villa “Bel Air” offers a different perspective. Its history is connected with the two Maltese noble families Testaferrata and Preziosi; in May 1935, they began construction of the building. In 1968, the villa was rented for Italy’s diplomatic chancery. The start of construction and its later diplomatic use are thus two clearly distinct milestones. For a stay focused on architecture and local history, this chronology complements the maritime emphasis.
Italy’s diplomatic chancery was also initially moved to Villa Marpa in Ta' Xbiex. Together with Bel Air, the two villas offer different connections to the same institution: Villa Marpa is associated with the first relocation, while Bel Air was rented in 1968. This comparison brings the diplomatic history to life through two named buildings.
Wartime and church history
Wartime history forms another historical layer. HMS Gregale consisted of four villas on Ta' Xbiex Terrace; Whitehall Mansions served as a base for the WRNS. The two connections have different emphases: for HMS Gregale, the group of four villas is part of the story, while for Whitehall Mansions, it is their role as a base. This makes it possible to distinguish between two specific chapters of the area’s history.
The parish church of Ta' Xbiex is called San Ä wann Tas-Salib. The Priory of the Discalced Carmelites of St. Theresa also forms part of the religious history: they laid its foundation stone within a year. The church and priory give local history a distinct focus alongside family history, diplomacy and wartime connections.
Seafront promenade and townscape
The Ix-Xatt ta' Ta' Xbiex seafront promenade adds a specific description of the landscape to these themes. It runs around a hill, from which stately villas overlook Marsamxett Harbour. Here, the shore, hill and architecture come together in a named local feature. When choosing the focus of your stay, you can distinguish between a specific sailing activity and the area’s various cultural and historical themes. The seafront promenade and villas add the landscape and townscape to this choice.
