There are different ways to shape a stay in Qrendi: around megalithic history, local architectural history or landscape views. Ħaġar Qim offers the broadest view into the past: the megalithic site dates from the late Neolithic period and is more than 5,000 years old. The Chapel of St Matthew and Guarena Palace offer other historical points of interest, while Ġnien Congreve provides a connection to gardens and the landscape. When planning your trip, you can decide whether archaeology, local history or views should take greater prominence.

Ħaġar Qim: Age, World Heritage and Landscape

Ħaġar Qim is part of the serial UNESCO World Heritage property Megalithic Temples of Malta, which was inscribed in 1992. This designation places the site in a wider context. Its location is also striking: Ħaġar Qim stands at the tip of a promontory. From there, the open sea lies to the west and the edge of a fertile plain to the east. These two named directions highlight the coast and the plain as distinct parts of the landscape.

Mnajdra lies 500 metres below Ħaġar Qim. Their different locations provide a concrete link between the archaeological sites. The Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park also has a visitor centre. The park thus connects archaeological themes with a designated place for visitors.

Chapel, Feast and Palace History

The Chapel of St Matthew consists of two chapels, both dedicated to the Apostle Matthew. Their division into two structures and their shared dedication are closely related aspects of its history. The Feast of St Matthew at Il-Maqluba is celebrated every year on the first Sunday after 21 September. As the date falls on a weekday determined by a fixed date, if you are planning your stay around the feast, it is worth checking the calendar for your chosen year.

Guarena Palace was built between 1735 and 1740. The palace grounds offer views of Qrendi. The construction dates and the view provide different perspectives: the dates place the building in its historical context, while the view draws attention to the town. Together with Ħaġar Qim’s late Neolithic origins, these dates represent two distinctly different historical periods.

Garden and Coastal Views

Ġnien Congreve is a historic public garden in Qrendi. It offers views of the open sea and Filfla. Unlike the views from Ħaġar Qim, which are described by compass directions and a plain, these views are framed by two specific maritime landmarks. This distinguishes the landscapes: here, the promontory, open sea and fertile plain are named; there, the sea and Filfla stand out. Alongside the archaeological sites, the garden is a distinct type of place with its own history.

Boat trips can be taken from Wied iż-Żurrieq. Their availability may vary depending on sea conditions, so keep your plans flexible if you intend to take one. The Blue Grotto and the surrounding coastline are among the most scenic and spectacular areas of the Maltese Islands. Alongside the views described above, you can therefore choose between a possible boat trip and a broader coastal perspective, depending on your landscape interests.
