River landscapes, oak forest and restored milling technology reveal different sides of Vilnius District Municipality. The region also has places where cultural history is connected to a specific building or person. The story ranges from technical work to archaeological heritage and literary history.

Milling technology as cultural heritage

Opened on 7 September 2026, the Liubavo Manor Mill-Museum is a museum of regional history, culture and technological heritage. The mill’s technological equipment has been fully restored—100 percent of it. The many processes once carried out there are studied and demonstrated, including the processing of grain, wood and metal, as well as the production of fulled cloth and electricity. This range of activities offers a tangible insight into the region’s technological history: the focus is not just on a single operation, but on a variety of different work processes. Restored equipment and demonstrations of historical technology combine to create a distinctive cultural-history highlight.

River landscapes and trails in Neris Regional Park

Neris Regional Park protects the landscape along the middle reaches of the Neris and the Dūkštai Oak Forest. The park has six named educational and information trails: the Dūkštas Educational Trail, the Dūkštai Oak Forest Educational Trail, the Grabijolai Educational Trail, the Karmazinai Educational Trail, the Saidė Educational Trail and the Šilėnai–Naujoji Rėva Educational Trail. Their names provide specific points of reference for exploring the landscape, from the oak forest to the other named trails. The park’s protected heritage also includes an archaeological heritage complex along the Neris between Vilnius and Kernavė. The park’s landscape thus encompasses river scenery, forest and archaeological heritage—distinctive aspects that also place this natural area in its cultural-historical context.

A tree and a poet’s home

At Glitiškės Manor, visitors can see the 600-year-old Glitiškės Oak. This ancient tree offers a different focus from the technological processes at Liubavo: here, natural and cultural heritage can be experienced at a single, named site. Another trail through cultural history leads to the Vladislovas Sirokomlė Museum in Bareikiškės. It is housed in a 19th-century wooden building where the poet lived and worked from 1853 to 1861. The building, its location and these dates give a visit to the museum a concrete literary-historical context.

The geographical centre of Europe

The Europos Geographical Centre complex is located in the village of Girija in Vilnius District Municipality. Visitors can receive a certificate confirming that they have reached the geographical centre of Europe. By car, the centre can be reached via the A14 towards Molėtai. The listed bus connection is Vilnius–Paberžė, departing from the stop on Molėtai Street near the Santariškės roundabout. Check before travelling whether this service is currently running.

A look at Vilnius County

In the wider Vilnius County destination, the Kernavė Archaeological Site offers a unique perspective on the region’s long history of settlement. It is an outstanding testament to around 10,000 years of human settlement and preserves the remains of five hillforts. The cultural reserve includes 15 archaeological and three historical monuments. Research material from the site is preserved and displayed at the Kernavė Archaeological Site Museum.
