Šešuoliai’s distinctive character is especially evident in its centre: three straight main streets converge on a trapezoidal square. The relationship between this square and St. Joseph’s Church is considered valuable urban heritage. The town can thus be understood through the interplay of its layout and church architecture; further historical traces lead to former administrative structures, settlements and places of remembrance.

St. Joseph’s Church and the square

The first church in Šešuoliai was built in 1572. The present wooden church dates from 1751 and is classified as folk Baroque. The two dates mark different periods in the church’s history. Individual furnishings also bear their own dates: the church contains an 18th-century wooden altar with seven sculptures, as well as a donor portrait dated 1762.

Further details continue the story in the building and churchyard. The church tower bears an ornamental cross from the 18th century. The churchyard is also home to a two-storey Stogastulpis with sculptures from the late 19th century. Taken together, these elements do not represent a single building period, but several clearly distinct historical layers around the church.

Townscape and earlier history

The trapezoidal square gives the town centre its distinctive shape. Three straight main streets converge on it; the spatial relationship between the square and the church is itself part of Šešuoliai’s cultural value. The old part of town is characterised by single-storey wooden houses from the first half of the 20th century. Alongside the older church building, these homes represent a later phase in the town’s history.

Šešuoliai was the centre of the former Šešuoliai valsčius, a historical administrative unit in what is now central-eastern Lithuania. The valsčius is recorded from 1539 and was definitively abolished on 20 June 1950. These dates place the name of the town within a longer administrative history without equating it with a present-day administrative unit.

The monument to Lithuania’s restored independence also has a changing history: it was reconstructed in 1989 after the original monument was demolished in 1951 or 1952. The demolition date is deliberately given as a range. This places the later reconstruction in time without turning the recorded date into a more precise year.

Settlement traces and remembrance

Mateikiškių Hillfort has archaeological, historical and landscape value. The site is on an isolated hill with steep slopes about ten metres high and a summit plateau. A former settlement lay at the foot of the hill; its cultural layer is around 70 centimetres thick. The hill, plateau and settlement layer thus point to different aspects of the site’s history: its distinctive landform and earlier traces of human settlement.

Another historical reference is the partisan battle site at Kazimierava, associated with the deaths of members of the Plieno and Voldemaras partisan units. It is connected with the deaths of members of the Plienas and Voldemaras partisan units. The clash at this site took place on 22 January 1946. This specific date distinguishes the memorial site from the more distant building and settlement traces.

Lake and orientation

Lake Šešuoliai lies west of the town. A description from 2022 notes that families, anglers and visitors from outside the area use the lake, especially in hot weather. If you include it in your travel plans today, check the current conditions and facilities on site. Roads connect Šešuoliai with Ukmergė and Širvintos.

Several different themes can help guide your visit: church architecture and the town layout, former administration, settlement traces, and remembrance of events from the 20th century. The lake adds a landscape dimension to these cultural and historical themes. You can weigh which of these aspects appeals to you by considering the town’s history.
