Lėnas brings together a clearly defined village centre, a lake and cultural sites in the surrounding area. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is therefore helpful to first decide whether to focus your stay on Lėnas or also include Užulėnis and Užugiris. The church and lake define Lėnas, while the surrounding area offers further points of interest, including Smetona connections, manor history and a memorial site.

Lake and Parish Church in Lėnas

The Church of St Anthony of Padua stands in Lėnas. Lake Lėno covers 265.2 hectares and is a lake of national importance. Its shores are low-lying and somewhat marshy. The area and the shape of the shoreline describe two different aspects of the lake: the size of the body of water and the character of its edges. Together with the church, they give the village a profile that combines a specific description of the landscape with a cultural point of interest in the village itself. When planning your visit, you can distinguish this local focus from the other points of interest in nearby villages.

Cultural History in Nearby Villages

Užulėnis, south of Lake Lėno, is the birthplace of President Antanas Smetona. Another connection to the lake can be found at the nearby Antanas Smetona Presidential Manor: its main façade faces Lake Lėno. Biographical history and a specific architectural orientation thus sit alongside the parish church’s connection to the village. An obelisk commemorating Lithuanian partisans also stands halfway between Lėnas and Taujėnai. This memorial site adds another theme of regional remembrance to the manor’s history.

Užugiris Manor was designated a regionally significant architectural, historical and landscape heritage site in 1992. The restored manor complex includes an Antanas Smetona Museum, office buildings, a former servants’ house and a cowshed. These named buildings give the manor a specific historical context; at the same time, a visit can be linked thematically to the Smetona connections in Užulėnis, without treating the two places as one.

Educational activities at Užugiris Manor include baking honey cake using Sofija Smetona’s recipe and rolls using Julija Smetonaitė’s recipe. As the programmes available may change, check in advance whether the activity you want is available on the date of your visit. At the old craft centre in Užulėnis, next to the museum, visitors can also take part in ethnographic educational activities about local history, traditions, customs and culinary heritage. Baking and crafts thus offer different ways to explore inherited recipes and everyday life in the region.

Landscape and Getting Around

Lėno Forest lies southwest of Lake Lėno. The Taujėnai–Užulėnis Forest Biosphere Polygon was established in 2004 and covers 22,531 hectares. It protects populations of black stork, lesser spotted eagle, crane, grey-headed woodpecker, middle spotted woodpecker and white-backed woodpecker. The focus thus shifts from a specific landscape by the lake to a large protected area with a clearly stated species-conservation purpose.

There is also a specific road reference for getting between Lėnas and Užulėnis: district road 4824 is 2 kilometres long, paved and located in Ukmergė District. If you include Užulėnis in your travel plans, this route provides a tangible connection between the two villages. The locations of individual cultural sites remain a separate factor in your planning.

Choose the Focus of Your Accommodation Search

When looking for a holiday apartment in Lėnas, it helps to set a clear focus: do you want the village, lake and parish church to be at the centre of your stay, or would you also like to include the manor, museum and educational activities in the surrounding area? Compare the accommodation’s location with the places that genuinely matter to you. This way, your choice reflects the mix of landscape, local history and cultural activities you want, rather than combining all these themes into a single destination.
