Ignalina District has up to 200 lakes as well as several dozen rivers and ponds. One third of the district is covered by forests, and one quarter consists of protected areas. The district includes a large part of Aukštaitija National Park; many of the fourteen regional parks and various nature reserves are also located here. This gives travel planning a clear focus on nature, which can be complemented by regional history and opportunities to stay active.

Lakes, Forests and Trails

The “Pearls of Ignalina Region’s Sights” route runs through Aukštaitija National Park. Another way to experience the landscape actively is the educational walking trail at Paliesius Manor: it is suitable for hiking, jogging, and cycling and leads through a quiet, damp forest. Cross-country ski trails are set up along this route in winter. This makes trails through the landscape a key attraction at different times of year.

Regional History at the Museum

The Ignalina Region Museum presents the history of the region and its residents, as well as its crafts, customs, and traditions. The ethnographic exhibition features authentic household items, tools, and equipment from the 19th and 20th centuries. This gives everyday objects and work implements a tangible place in regional history. One exhibition traces the journey of flax from sowing to the finished bed linen or tablecloth. Another focuses on traditional fishing methods and explains how the fish people caught helped the region’s residents survive. Together, these themes offer two distinct glimpses into past ways of life: flax processing and the importance of fishing.

The museum regularly organizes events, exhibitions, and educational activities. If you plan to include a particular program in your stay, check the dates in advance.

Sport and Recreation

Ignalina Sports and Entertainment Centre has a swimming pool and a bathhouse complex with a salt steam room, aroma and sauna rooms, and Lithuanian and Turkish saunas. There are also mineral-water and freshwater hot tubs. These bathing and sauna facilities complement outdoor activities such as hiking, jogging, and cycling on the trail at Paliesius Manor.

Beekeeping and Culinary Heritage Nearby

Nearby, the Beekeeping Museum is located in Stripeikiai. It offers interactive exhibitions and honey tastings and sits on the edge of Minčia Forest, in the northwestern part of Aukštaitija National Park. Stripeikiai is the oldest village in the park and was first mentioned in 1357 in Livonian chronicles. The museum is managed by the administration of Aukštaitija National Park and Labanoras Regional Park.

Paliesius Manor is also nearby. It hosts concerts and educational programs. Bread and sweet pastries are also baked there in a traditional birchwood-fired oven, following authentic culinary heritage recipes. In this way, events and traditional baked goods add another cultural focus to the nature and museum themes.
