A toboggan run, views from a church tower and a narrow-gauge railway museum with hands-on exhibits give Anykščiai a range of different attractions. If you are looking for a hotel in Anykščiai, you can first consider whether you want your stay to focus on activities, views or culture. Literary memorial sites and a varied collection of angels round out the options, making it easy to tailor your trip to your interests.
Toboggan Run and Different Views
At Kalitos kalnas, you will find Lithuania’s first two-track toboggan run. It is 500 metres long and can be used in both summer and winter, making it an option for a trip outside the winter season too.
An observation platform has been set up 33 metres above the ground in the right-hand tower of Šv. Mato bažnyčia; 186 steps lead up to it. From there, visitors can take in the panorama of the area around Anykščiai and learn more about the church’s history and origins. The views and the church’s history are part of the same visit.
Nearby, in the village of Dvaronių, is Medžių lajų takas. The path is 300 metres long and climbs steadily to a height of 21 metres above the ground. At the end stands an observation tower with a platform 34 metres high. At 33 and 34 metres, the platforms are nearly the same height, but the access is different: the church tower has 186 steps, while the treetop path climbs steadily. In terms of length alone, the 500-metre toboggan run is longer than the 300-metre treetop path. For the path, 21 metres refers to its height above the ground, while 34 metres refers to the platform’s height.
See and Try the Narrow-Gauge Railway
The Siauruko Museum displays the “Škoda” “Kukuška” steam locomotive and other narrow-gauge railway vehicles. Visitors can also try out a working handcar and a tricycle that runs on rails. The museum thus combines viewing historic vehicles with the chance to try out two rail vehicles for yourself.
Literary Memorial Sites and a Collection of Angels
Antano-Baranausko-Klėtelė preserves and displays authentic furniture, household items and books belonging to Antanas Baranauskas and his family. The Antano-Žukausko-Vienuolio Memorial House Museum, by contrast, preserves the writer’s authentic domestic and creative world. The two literary sites have different focuses: one centres on specific personal belongings, while the other presents the preserved domestic and creative world.
The Angelų muziejus complements these themes with a collection of more than a hundred angels in a variety of forms. These include painted, wooden, ceramic and glass figures. The different materials and forms give the collection its own focus alongside the memorial sites devoted to writers and their lives.
