Varniai was chosen as the center of the Samogitian Diocese during the Christianization of Samogitia. This historic role is reflected in its churches, the Diocesan Museum, and the house of Motiejus Valančius. The surrounding region adds nature to the picture: Varniai Regional Park encompasses lakes, wetlands, and hills formed by glacial activity; destinations in Varnių seniūnija offer their own highlights. For trip planning, this means choosing between the history of Varniai itself and the landscapes and excursions in the surrounding area.
Churches and diocesan history
The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is a Baroque basilica with three naves and twelve altars. The three naves describe the basilica’s layout, while the twelve altars give a concrete impression of its furnishings. The church also preserves an episcopal throne associated with Motiejus Valančius. The building thus brings together architecture, furnishings, and a connection to a notable historical figure. The Church of St. Alexander is considered the oldest church in Samogitia, adding a regional perspective to the picture of the area’s churches.
Museum and collections
The Museum of the Samogitian Diocese is housed in the historic buildings of the Samogitian Seminary in Varniai. It displays sacred treasures, works of art, and historical objects; archaeological artifacts date back to 15th- and 16th-century Samogitia. The collection thus covers religious, artistic, and archaeological themes. The museum tower offers panoramic views of Varniai. The museum offers bookable guided tours and educational activities and has been adapted for visitors with mobility impairments.
Two life stories in one place
Bishop Motiejus Valančius lived in his house from 1850 to 1864; Simon Daukantas lived there from 1851 to 1855. Daukantas’s time there falls entirely within the period when Valančius lived in the house. The house thus connects two biographies in the same place and offers another way to explore Varniai’s history, alongside its churches and the Diocesan Museum.
The landscape of the regional park
Varniai Regional Park encompasses lakes, diverse wetlands, and hills formed by glacial activity. Lake Lūkstas and its shore are also near Varniai. Around Lake Biržulis in Varniai Regional Park, the Pabiržulis archaeological reserve has revealed about 50 Stone Age settlements and burial sites, with traces of several ancient cultures. The regional landscape thus offers two distinct themes: natural landforms and archaeological traces of earlier cultures.
Nature trail and excursion destination
In Graužai, within Varnių seniūnija, the Debesnų Botanical Trail follows the Varnelė Valley and introduces visitors to wetland vegetation. It is approximately two kilometers long and has twelve information boards. Its approximate length helps with planning a day trip, while the boards introduce the natural environment along the route.
An excursion route in the Telšiai region lists Sprūdė Hillfort, in the village of Šaukštelis within Varnių seniūnija, as its final destination. Its focus differs from that of the Debesnų Trail: the trail centers on wetland vegetation, while the hillfort is the main attraction here. The surrounding region thus offers two distinct options: a botanical trail and a cultural-historical destination.
