Kalnėnai offers a mix of river landscapes, forests and historic sites. The Venta runs along the southern edge of the town; old cemeteries, a birch grove, a pine forest and the winding Dubupis each give the landscape a distinctive character. When planning your stay, you can choose between focusing on nature and waterways or on archaeological and historic sites.

River, Terrain and Forests

The old cemeteries of Kalnėnai lie on a small rise at the foot of the slope of the Venta’s second floodplain terrace. This setting adds a specific landform to the vegetation features. If you classify landscapes not only by tree species or waterways, but also by their relief, the cemeteries’ elevated position is a distinct feature.

Birželė is a birch grove near the Venta in Kalnėnai; Petroškos pušynas is a seven-hectare pine forest. The two wooded sites are distinguished by their tree species alone; the pine forest also has a specified area. The Dubupis adds another feature: it winds through meadows dotted with trees and has a stony riverbed. Together, a named grove, a forest defined by its area and a winding stream offer different ways to focus on nature. The banks of the Kalnėnų-II reservoir are relatively high and sparsely covered with trees and shrubs. Unlike the Dubupis, with its tree-dotted meadows and stony riverbed, it presents a different kind of waterside landscape.

Cemeteries and Historic Traces

The Kalnėnų I–II cemeteries, also known as Dainiaus Bulviarūsiai, are in a wooded area. Human bones and bronze and iron objects have been found at Balsio kapeliai. A field track runs through Balsio kapeliai from west to east.

A wooden cross erected in 1927 stands at Rimkaus kapeliai; the site was formerly called Milžinkapiai. Kalnėnai was mentioned in the 1605 inventory of the Tirkšliai estate. The dates refer to different things: 1927 dates the cross, while 1605 is the year Kalnėnai was mentioned. A specific memorial and a historical reference to the town thus stand as separate features.

Route and Regional Context

The Pavenčių keliukas is two kilometers long and runs along the floodplains of Kalnėnai through meadows with shrubs. If you want to factor a specific route length into your travel plans, this figure provides a clear reference point. Petroškos pušynas, by contrast, is described by its area of seven hectares. These two measurements help you choose between a route through floodplains and a pine forest as different nature-focused options.

In Mažeikiai District, six rest areas for water tourism and 19 information boards about attractions have been set up along the Venta water route. Check the current status of the rest areas before making specific plans.
