Around Margiai are cultural sites spanning very different periods: in Žeimelis, a museum in a restored historic inn, churches with dated construction phases, and archaeological evidence come together. Steigviliai and Striukai add rural history and exhibitions to the picture. Depending on your interests, you can explore collections, architectural history, and former settlements.

Museum and Churches in Žeimelis

The Žiemgala Museum in Žeimelis moved in 1993 to a restored historic small inn in the centre of the town. According to the museum, its collection comprises more than 6,000 exhibits; its programme also includes educational activities and exhibitions. If you want to attend a particular activity, check the current programme in advance, as the museum’s offerings may change. The archaeological, ethnographic, and historical collections focus on the past of the Semigallian region.

The architectural history of the churches also offers specific points of reference. The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Žeimelis was built in 1828 and rebuilt in 1928. If you want to see the interior, check access arrangements in advance. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Žeimelis dates from 1793; its tower and sacristy date from 1890. The preserved complex also includes a rectory, an outbuilding, and a well.

Archaeological Traces and Village History

The remains of the Žeimelis hillfort are located near Žeimelis. They date from the 1st millennium to the 13th century; the plateau is irregularly shaped and measures 60 × 100 metres. Another archaeological site is the cemetery near Žeimelis, attributed to the Semigallians and dated to the 6th–13th centuries. Its grave goods included weapons, tools, and jewellery. The hillfort and cemetery thus represent different types of archaeological evidence in the area around Margiai.

The village of Steigviliai has a windmill, a lake, and various old brick and wooden houses. Steigviliai is considered a former royal village. A visit to regional researcher Aleksas Pasuskevicius is possible by prior appointment. If you would like to plan a visit, arrange an appointment in advance.

The Striukai homestead complex houses a rural life museum and an exhibition of Soviet-era machinery. Exhibits and visiting arrangements may change; check in advance if you plan to visit this place in particular.
