Tytuvėnai Regional Park preserves a chain of lakes and a characteristic hilly, forested and marshy landscape. It also offers insights into birds, lakes and forests: at the visitor centre with the “Iš gervės skrydžio” exhibition, at the Tytuvėnai Forest Museum and through the “Miško karalystė” programme. To help with planning, it is useful to distinguish clearly between the offerings, which focus on different topics, from specific bodies of water to forest ecosystems and forest use.

Lakes and landscape in Tytuvėnai Regional Park

The park’s chain of lakes includes Gauštvinis, Apušis, Gilius and Bridvaišis. You will also encounter two of these names in the “Iš gervės skrydžio” exhibition: objects from the depths of lakes Gilius and Bridvaišis are on display there. This creates a specific connection between two named bodies of water and the exhibition’s themes.

The landscape is also characterised by hills, forests and marshy areas. This distinctive landscape is also reflected in the historic small towns of Šiluva and Tytuvėnai. The chain of lakes and the landscape describe different aspects of the regional park: the lakes identify individual bodies of water, while hills, forest and marshes give a broader picture of the surroundings. This can help you decide whether to focus your plans on individual lakes or on the landscape as a whole.

Birdlife and lakes at the visitor centre

The “Iš gervės skrydžio” exhibition at the Tytuvėnai Regional Park visitor centre is devoted to cranes and other topics. It features a film about cranes, a crane’s nest, a beaver lodge and objects from the depths of Gilius and Bridvaišis; you can also hear bird calls. The film, nest, animal structure, calls and objects from the lakes bring together different forms of presentation. The exhibition therefore goes beyond a single animal or the lakes, combining birdlife, beavers and finds from the waters.

Forest knowledge and collections

The collections at the Tytuvėnai Forest Museum range from garden and forest birds to forest animals. They also include the diversity of local insects and woodcrafts by local folk artists. Nature themes and craftsmanship are presented side by side. If you are interested in forests, the museum offers more than a look at animals: insects and local folk art are also among its exhibition themes.

The “Miško karalystė” programme takes a different approach. It covers the forest ecosystem, past and present activities in the forest, mythical creatures and various birds. It also explores how forest products are used and which of them are edible. Compared with the museum collections, the programme extends further into forest use and forest products. This distinguishes the two approaches: one focuses on collection areas, while the other is a programme that addresses ecology, history and practical use.
