There are various themes to choose from for a trip to Alkiškiai: the history of the Evangelical Lutheran church, a coin hoard, a state forest beside the town and a water route on the Dabikinė. Cultural history and landscape offer different focal points; paddling adds a separate route-planning consideration. The municipal bus route No. 74 also serves the area. First decide which themes matter for your stay, then check the timetable and water conditions to suit your plans.

Church: Building History and the Postwar Period

Construction of the Alkiškių evangelikų liuteronų bažnyčia began in 1861, and it was consecrated in 1865. The site’s history began as a prayer house and a branch of the Šiaulių evangelikų liuteronų bažnyčia. The prayer house and its connection as a branch mark the church’s beginnings; the dates refer to the start of construction and the consecration. The church is also one of three Latvian churches that remained in Lithuania after the Second World War. This postwar connection adds another historical layer to the building’s history. At the same church site, an earlier place of prayer, a later consecration and the story of its preservation after the war come together.

A Coin Hoard from Two Centuries

Another way to explore the area’s history is the hoard found in Alkiškiai: about 370 silver coins from the 16th and 17th centuries. Part of the find is held at the Vilniaus istorijos ir etnografijos muziejus. Alongside the church’s history, this offers a specific account of a find, with an approximate quantity and a date spanning two centuries. The church and the coin hoard offer different perspectives on the past: one through its building and ecclesiastical history, the other through the coins found and the partly specified place where they are kept.

The Alkiškių miškas as a Landscape Feature

The Alkiškių miškas lies beside Alkiškiai and is also known as the Alkiškių pušynas. The state forest covers about 100 hectares and is classified as a forest park. Its approximate area and forest park classification give this landscape feature a concrete scale. If you give cultural history and nature different weight, you can consider the forest as a separate focus alongside the church and coin hoard.

Paddling on the Dabikinė

Near Alkiškiai, there is a water route on the Dabikinė along the right bank, heading towards Akmenė. Kayaks, canoes or similar paddle boats are recommended. The direction, side of the river and recommended types of boat are therefore specified for planning purposes. If you are considering this option, check the waterway conditions and whether it is suitable for your plans before setting out. This allows you to consider paddling as a separate activity alongside the cultural history and landscape themes.

Getting There and Planning

Municipal local bus route No. 74 Akmenė–Daubiškiai–Sablauskiai–Akmenė passes through Alkiškiai and stops there. Since bus routes and timetables are subject to change, check the timetable before your trip and make sure the stop in Alkiškiai fits your travel date. For bus travel and paddling, it is worth considering each separately: for the bus, check the timetable; for the Dabikinė, check the route conditions and suitability. The historical sites and forest, meanwhile, can help you choose the focus of your stay.
