Several themes are central to exploring Panevėžio rajono municipality: contemporary outdoor art, hands-on crafts, historic buildings and the landscape along the Nevėžis. The different places and activities offer concrete ways to discover them.
Art and History in Special Places
The “Mėnulio akmens” sculpture park is an exhibition of contemporary art and, at the same time, an open-air museum. In Stultiškiai, a windmill houses the Flax Museum. The mill was built in 1880, restored in 1994 and adapted for tourism. Bistrampolis Manor has existed since the late 15th century and is considered a cultural heritage site. Together, these places represent different historical periods: from the manor’s long history to the windmill’s specific construction and restoration dates.
Discover Traditional Crafts
At the Flax Museum, visitors can try a 19th-century flax-processing method as part of an educational programme. Booking is required. At the Upytė Centre for Traditional Crafts, craft and folk art exhibitions are complemented by educational programmes where visitors can learn ceramics, spinning and weaving. The programmes take place by prior arrangement. Visitors can also learn to press linseed oil and prepare various dishes; participation in these activities should also be arranged in advance.
The activities offer different hands-on experiences: the Flax Museum focuses on a historical flax-processing method, while the educational programmes in Upytė cover several craft techniques and food preparation. If you would like to include an activity in your travel plans, bear in mind that booking or arranging it in advance is necessary.
Nature in Krekenava Regional Park
Founded in 1992, Krekenava Regional Park extends along both sides of the Nevėžis Valley. It protects the ancient valley of the Nevėžis, with its many tributaries and remnants of oxbow lakes. Guided walks can be booked in the park. The “Pojūčių takas” sensory trail runs beside the observation tower, offering challenges, creative elements and nature experiences. These provide two distinct ways to experience the landscape: a guided walk and a trail focused on the senses.
European bison, listed in the international Red Data Book, can be observed at the Pašiliai Bison Paddock. As numbers and access conditions may change, check the current conditions before your visit.
More to Discover in Panevėžys District
The Įstros Aircraft Museum is another destination for culture enthusiasts in Panevėžys District. It has outdoor and indoor exhibitions on the history of aviation. On display are pilots’ equipment and other items used during the First and Second World Wars. It is Lithuania’s only open-air museum of aircraft replicas and is open in all weather and throughout the year.
The Upytė Centre for Traditional Crafts is also in Panevėžys District. It was established on the grounds of Upytė Manor, next to the manor’s granary. In Krekenava Regional Park, a 30-metre-high observation tower, built in 2014, stands beside the visitor centre. The asymmetrical steel tower is secured with guy wires. Another way to experience the landscape is the 1.6-kilometre educational trail in the Nevėžis Valley. It follows a horseshoe-shaped oxbow lake, with an observation platform nearby.
