In Marijampolė County, discoveries range from urban history and biographies to bogs, forests and landscapes shaped by the Ice Age. Individual municipalities are home to museums and cultural heritage sites, while nature trails open up distinctive habitats. When choosing a hotel in the county, a simple question can help: should your trip focus mainly on exhibitions and history, or more on landscapes and nature experiences?

Museums spanning urban history and biographies

The Marijampolė Regional Museum and the President Kazys Grinius Museum preserve around 40,000 exhibits on everyday life and ethnography, visual arts, literature, photography, numismatics and archaeology. The exhibition “City by the River Šešupė” traces the city’s history from its founding to Lithuania’s restoration of independence. Topics include changes to the city’s name, heraldry and city plans from different periods. “Spirit of the Nation” takes a different approach: the exhibition presents the prehistory and the spiritual and ethnographic heritage of Suvalkija (Sūduva). This places urban development and regional cultural history side by side as distinct ways of exploring the area.

Street art also shapes Marijampolė: new works are added to city buildings every year, attracting local and international tourists. Another historic destination is Jono Basanavičius’ birthplace. There, a reconstructed single-farmstead belonging to a wealthy Suvalkija farmer showcases traditional residential and farm buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Operating since 1991, the museum conveys the everyday life of such a farmer, the ethnic culture characteristic of Sūduva, and the life and work of Jono Basanavičius.

The Vinco Kudirka Museum focuses on the author of the Lithuanian national anthem; its exhibition also presents the place where he spent the final years of his life. Guided tours are offered in Lithuanian, as is a tour of Kudirkos Naumiestis. Both must be booked in advance; booking details may change. Families can take part in educational activities on the Lithuanian National Revival, Vincas Kudirka and the history of literature. Availability may vary, so it is advisable to check in advance.

Cultural heritage and distinctive collections

The Sudargas hill fort complex is regarded as the most significant site in historical, archaeological and cultural terms after the hill forts of Kernavė. The Day of the Sudargas Hill Forts is held there every year during the Joninės, or Rasos, celebrations. Paežeriai Manor is a cultural heritage ensemble with historical, architectural, urban and landscape value; in 1992, it was added to the list of protected sites as a cultural asset of national significance. A two-storey brick granary survives at Gižai Manor. The estate has been mentioned since the 18th century.

Other collections stand out for their clear focus. The Hammer Museum in Degučiai displays around 1,000 hammers, each numbered and labelled with its country of origin and purpose. The Cross-Stitch Picture Museum features a world map 1.6 metres long and over a metre high, made with more than 250,000 cross-stitches. These tangible objects complement the historical exhibitions with vivid insights into craftsmanship and textile design.

Nature trails and Ice Age landscapes

In Vištytis Regional Park, the effects of the last Ice Age can be seen in several landforms. Glacial tongues formed the highest hills of the Suwałki Heights, carved out Lake Vištytis, brought large erratic boulders to the surface and turned flatter areas into wetlands. More than 60 larch trees, around 150 years old and approximately 30 metres tall, grow in Maumedžių Grove near the Polish border; there is also a rest area.

The Buktos Nature Trail is in Marijampolė Municipality, six kilometres southeast of Liudvinavas. Walks of 1.3 and 1.7 kilometres lead to seven stops where visitors can learn about hornbeam forests, floodplain forests, swampy deciduous forests, and the local plant and animal species. The rest area has a shelter, swings, rubbish bins and a toilet. A dedicated fire pit allows visitors to hang a pot, cook soup and eat in the forest.

The Amalva Nature Trail leads into one of the largest bogs in Suvalkija. Information boards cover the bog’s history, its ecosystem, and its animal and plant life.
