Šilutė combines a state-protected historic town centre with a distinctive architectural history and activities in the river landscape of the Nemunas Delta. For planning your trip, you can distinguish between the main themes: urban heritage and architecture, the history of the Hugo Šojus Manor, or a boat trip or route. This way, you can first decide which side of the town you would like to shape your stay.

Old Town, Church and Historic Traces

The historic town centre of Šilutė is state-protected cultural heritage of national significance. A prominent building is the Evangelical Lutheran church: its 50-metre-high tower houses three bells and Lithuania’s largest tower clock. The church was built in 1926 to a design by architect K. Gutknecht. Beside the main altar is an 80-square-metre fresco by Richard Pfeifer depicting 104 people. The year of construction, tower and fresco offer different points of reference for understanding the church’s architecture and furnishings.

Large markets were held in the Old Market Square from the 16th century until the Second World War. The square is still surrounded by old buildings, and the stone paving remains beneath the asphalt. Two projects take different approaches to presenting other historical themes: the 500-metre-long “Šilutės sienos” features important events in the town’s history and notable figures from the region. “Šilutės sekretai,” by contrast, features 20 small rooms covered with glass and set into the pavement on Lietuvininkų Street. They illustrate life in historic houses from the late 19th to the early 20th century.

The Hugo Šojus Manor

The state manor, established in Šilutė in 1721, is an elegant example of late Classicism and Historicism. Its understated design is typical of the Klaipėda region. The Hugo Šojus Museum has been located at the manor since 2015. Some of the former outbuildings house restoration and educational centres. The manor thus brings together architectural history and the former outbuildings’ varied uses; this focus differs from the market and urban-space themes of the Old Town.

The iron arch bridge over the Šyša is also part of the townscape’s history: it is an urban monument in Šilutė’s Old Town. Along with the buildings around the Old Market Square and the church, it shows how different structures form part of the historic town centre.

Boat Trips and Routes

From Šilutė, visitors can discover the river landscape and biological diversity of the Nemunas Delta Regional Park on a boat trip. The small-boat harbour at Uosto g. 9 is listed as a place for embarking and disembarking. Check current services and departure arrangements before making specific plans.

If you prefer an overland route, there is another way to explore: the “Rusnės sala” route from the Šilutė Tourism Centre passes through Šilutė and can be travelled by car or bicycle. Another route is called “Kintai – Ventės ragas – Minija” and includes Šilutė as well as the Aukštumala raised bog landscape, the Aukštumala educational trail and Rupkalviai. Information about boat trips and routes offers different focal points for planning your trip, rather than prescribing a fixed itinerary. When looking for a hotel in Šilutė, you can therefore first consider whether you are most interested in the town’s history, the river landscape from a boat, or a route by car or bicycle.
