Almost a quarter of the area of Šilutė District Municipality is occupied by the deltas of the Nemunas and Minija rivers. This makes the landscape a defining consideration when planning a trip. At the same time, manor houses, museums and local history offer other focal points. When looking for a place to stay, it is worth first deciding whether cultural sites or nature and the delta should be at the heart of your stay.

Delta, Bird Migration and Landscape

Cape Ventė is the westernmost point of the municipality and a peninsula on the eastern shore of the Curonian Lagoon. The red-brick lighthouse there was built in 1852. The museum at the cape presents the history of bird ringing and the study of bird migration. The station at the cape has Europe’s largest trapping nets for migratory birds. This place thus brings together a distinctive structure and a specific focus on nature and research.

The Aukštumala educational trail is 2,400 metres long and lies in the Aukštumalė telmological reserve. It offers insights into a raised bog, its typical plants and animals, and the landscape. The Tulkiaragė educational trail is 1.8 kilometres long in one direction and runs along a dike by Lake Krokų-Lankos. This directional detail is important when comparing the routes: the stated length of Tulkiaragė applies to one direction.

There is also an educational trail in the Kintai forestry district; its observation towers offer views over the Curonian Lagoon. Kintai is also home to the Great Kintai Arborvitae, the largest thuja in Lithuania. It is about 19.5 metres tall, and its crown is about 12 metres wide. A small-boat harbour was established in the town in 2014 to meet the needs of fishermen and tourists. In the village of Minija, boating and water skiing are among the water- and land-tourism activities.

Manor Houses, Museums and Local History

The Hugo Šojus Manor House in Šilutė was established as a state manor in 1721. The elegant building combines late Classicism and Historicism and features decoration typical of the Memel Territory. Since 2015, the Hugo Šojus Museum has been housed in the manor house. The building’s history and the museum thus form a shared cultural theme at the same named location.

The Švėkšna exhibition of the Švėkšna Museum comprises four halls devoted to ethnography, archaeology, manor-house history and local history. A different aspect of everyday and working life is presented by the Ethnographic Fishing Settlement Museum. Its exhibits include fishing and household items; it also presents the way of life and activities of a typical fishing farmer from the Memel Territory.

The Kintai Vydūnas Cultural Centre and Memorial Museum is located in the former Kintai school, built in 1705. Vilhelmas Storosta-Vydūnas worked there from 1888 to 1892. The centre also organises tourist routes in the area around Kintai. This local history therefore provides a separate reason to include Kintai in thematic planning, alongside the landscape trails.

The Vilkėnai Manor ensemble was built between 1880 and 1897. It includes a two-storey Neo-Renaissance manor house with a tower and a park with a mixed design. These different architectural forms and historical themes can be considered alongside the four exhibition topics in Švėkšna, without implying a fixed itinerary.

The Uostadvaris water-lifting station, built in 1907, houses the Šilutė Polder Museum. The 18-metre-high Uostadvaris lighthouse is a technical monument and observation tower with views of the area around Rusnė and Minija; it is no longer used for navigation.

Plan Access Before Your Trip

Access to the Šilutė Polder Museum is limited; check before your trip whether a visit is possible. The lighthouse at Cape Ventė can be climbed freely and serves as an observation point. Nevertheless, check access before you arrive.
