The first old village cemeteries of Toleikiai form a state-protected regional memorial site. This connection to remembrance is a specific historical starting point when considering the area as a travel destination. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether local remembrance is your main focus or whether you would also like to explore cultural and landscape attractions in Klaipėda District.

History and Landscape in Dovilai

In the wider region, Dovilų piliakalnis is located in Piliakalnio miškas, on the right bank of the Minija. Its elongated, narrow area along a ridge measures 110 × 20–25 metres. At either end are ramparts 0.5 to 2.5 metres high; the steep slopes are about nine metres high. The hill is also known as Gedminų pilis and Dusmenų piliakalnis. These dimensions give the landscape a clear, tangible scale.

The site also has a notable wartime history: in late 1944, Dovilų piliakalnis was incorporated into Klaipėda’s defence system. A trench was dug along the eastern edge of the area, and concrete machine-gun positions, known as Kocho bunkers, were built into the ramparts. An anti-tank trench with a rampart runs along the slopes. If you plan to visit the hill, follow the signs from the settlement of Dovilai carefully.

Another historical aspect of Dovilai is its church history. The parish was established in 1854. The church was built within a year and consecrated on 18 September 1862. These dates provide a distinct historical reference point alongside the history of the hill.

Crafts, Collections and Regional Themes

At the Klaipėdos rajono etninės kultūros centre in Dovilai, several programmes offer different ways to engage with culture. “Šiaudo magija” explores traditional techniques for making straw gardens. “Margučių dažymas vašku” focuses on traditions and techniques for decorating eggs with wax; seasonal scheduling may change. “Iš lietuvininko gyvenimo” presents a rare collection of old books belonging to the Lietuvininkai, while “Skambantys namai” showcases a collection of traditional musical instruments.

In the “Juostų vijimo dirbtuvės” workshop, participants practise making their own bands using colours and patterns of their choice. The programme therefore includes practical techniques as well as collections. The excursion “Kelionė su archeologu po Klaipėdos rajono piliakalnius” is intended for schoolchildren and adults, and complements the craft themes with an archaeological focus. Check programme details before planning your visit, particularly for seasonally scheduled activities.

Klaipėda District spans areas of the ethnographic regions of Mažoji Lietuva and Žemaitija, whose political, economic and cultural pasts differ. The tourist-cultural route “Gyvenimas etnografinių regionų paribyje” includes twelve selected sites connected with the former border area. As an independent traveller, you can choose which sites to visit, including all of them or only selected ones. This lets you choose the route according to your interests, rather than treating every stop as one compulsory itinerary. Check the route details and access conditions before visiting.
