Žemaičių Naumiestis can be understood through a variety of cultural, historical and landscape features: the interior of the Church of St Michael the Archangel, an old cobbled market square, a 19th-century watermill and a reservoir in the northern part of town. There is also an Evangelical Lutheran church, a monument with a clear sequence of three dates, and the nearby Vanagių hillfort. The details span everything from early history to more recent events with precise dates.

Churches and historical traces

The interior of the Church of St Michael the Archangel is distinguished by five altars and a pulpit. A 19th-century painting of Saint Martinian adds a work of art in its own right to the furnishings. Thus, an ensemble that defines the church interior sits alongside a single historical painting. Žemaičių Naumiestis also has an Evangelical Lutheran church. The two churches represent different religious traditions, while the details of the furnishings give a closer impression of the Church of St Michael the Archangel.

The old market square is paved with stones and has changed little since the early 19th century. The emphasis here is on the continuity of the square. By contrast, the monument to those who fell in the struggle for Lithuania’s freedom tells a story in three stages: it was erected in 1928, demolished in 1951 and rebuilt in 1988. This sequence distinguishes the original erection, demolition and reconstruction. The monument’s later history is therefore a subject in its own right, alongside its original erection.

A watermill built in the 19th century adds another type of structure to the town’s history. The surviving Vanagių hillfort lies near Žemaičių Naumiestis and evokes the first millennium. Compared with the monument’s documented history and the market square, which has changed little since the early 19th century, the hillfort takes us back to a much earlier period. These different features can thus be distinguished by their respective dates and character.

Reservoir and guided tours

The Žemaičių Naumiestis Reservoir lies in the northern part of town and covers 29.9 hectares. This precise figure adds a specific landscape feature to the town’s history. The reservoir thus offers a different perspective from the churches, market square and monument: here, the landscape takes its place alongside built and commemorated history.

The Žemaičių Naumiestis Museum became a branch of the Šilutė Museum in 1992. A guided 45-minute overview tour in Lithuanian is available for the Žemaičių Naumiestis exhibition, for groups of up to 25 people. A 45-minute overview tour in Lithuanian is also available for Žemaičių Naumiestis itself and can likewise accommodate up to 25 people. The main difference is the subject: one tour focuses on the exhibition, while the other focuses on the town. If you are planning a tour for a specific date, check in advance whether it will be available then.
